What consistent practice can do!

Robert retired at sixty from thirty-eight years as a civil engineer.

He had always wanted to play piano.

He had always thought: someday.

Someday arrived with retirement.

He didn't hire a teacher.

He found a free Yamaha keyboard at a garage sale.

He found a YouTube channel called "Piano for Complete Beginners."

He practiced every morning for one hour.

His wife bought him noise-canceling headphones.

He kept going.

After two years, he could play simple pieces.

After four, he was working through Chopin nocturnes.

At sixty-five, he entered an amateur senior piano competition in Boston.

He came in third.

He came in second the following year.

At sixty-seven, the competition's organizer asked if he would perform in the showcase concert.

The venue: a recital hall at Carnegie Hall.

Robert stood backstage and thought about the civil engineering blueprints he had drawn for thirty-eight years.

Everything he had built with precision.

Then he walked out and played from memory for twelve minutes.

The audience gave him a standing ovation.

His wife was in the front row.

She had sat through seven years of morning practice.

She stood the fastest.

She had earned the right. 🎹💛🇺🇸
