“With the recent passing of Dolly Parton, I wanted to take a moment to honor her incredible life and legacy while also highlighting some of the amazing artwork created by our YHS students.
Back in 2023, one of my students in Advanced Art & Design created this portrait of Dolly Parton as part of our Monochromatic Portrait project.
For this assignment, I start with an original photograph and bring it into Photoshop, where I create a monochromatic version broken into different color values. Students then trace the image, label each section according to its value, and paint the portrait using Tints, Tones, and Shades.
The project is a great exercise in understanding value, contrast, form, and color, while also giving students the opportunity to transform a recognizable person into their own work of art.
I thought this particular portrait was especially fitting to share now. Dolly Parton was not only an extraordinary musician and entertainer, but also someone whose creativity, generosity, and ability to inspire others left an incredible mark on the world.
It seems only fitting that we remember her through the creativity of our own students.
