☀️ Surface of the Sun hot out here! 🥵

Great chance to work on HOW you ride your bike! Balance & cadence & core engagement are closely connected!

Riding at lower heart rate and power gives you the chance to fine-tune these. As well as practicing looking behind; grabbing bottles & food; riding no hands - all while holding a straight line.

It’s ok to scale bike duration & intensity on these hot days! Get a reboot, skills check and ready with freshness in the system for the next cooler day 😎

The disciplined path may feel like a grind from time to time, but when weighed against the cost of inactivity, or even casual activity, the rewards of a consistent and disciplined approach to fitness are resounding.

This adage may not come from ancient wisdom but its truth makes a strong point against the backdrop of a world punctuated by distractions and comfort.

At BWC, we salute you and your commitment to improvement this year and into the future!

Athlete Profile: Last week Julie Hancock Dunkle completed her first Leadville Trail 100 MTB and event she has been dreaming about all year. Her path to the LT100 ran through the UnBound 200 where she earned a PR and got on the podium.

Her daily discipline in training has been the backbone of her success and we couldn’t be more proud of her.

Great job Julie! You are an inspiration and an example to us all. Keep up the good work and we can’t wait to see your Leadville fitness put to work at Gravel Nationals!

For all the talk about talent and it’s influence on success, we only need to look to quotes like this to remind us that effort is the single greatest factor in achieving success.

And deep down, we know this to be true, but acknowledging it means we can’t escape putting in the effort necessary to achieve the success we strive for.

Want to get faster for an upcoming event?

Make the investment and put in the effort. Success will follow!

Looking to build more power and deeper fitness?

Effort and purposeful training plot the path forward!

Or is the goal simply to cheat “Father Time” and keep up with the “young bucks” on the local group ride?

Again, putting in some extra effort, not relying on developed talents or skills, is a surefire way to make progress in the face of any age-related slowdown.

Athlete Highlight:
Eli Watson of Bros Ride Bikes fame has had a big season!

With multiple European racing trips and plenty of domestic race days on his calendar he has had to double-down on his already stiff training regimen.

Buddy Eli has been disciplined throughout the season and is fired-up for the upcoming Green Mountain Stage Race, an event we are confident that he is going to do GREAT at!

Keep up the good work Buddy Eli, we are proud of you and pumped that you are part of the BWC Squad!

The best is yet to come, Dude!

At Big Wheel Coaching, we are ALWAYS Coaching!

Our “in the trenches” approach to coaching creates confident athletes who can lead from the front and squeeze the most out of their potential in training and on race day!

Being a family owned business, our coaches have each others back 100%, lending support and coaching for everyone involved with our programs.

Coach Brian giving Kristen Smith - coached by Joy, some final tips for her XCC race at USA Cycling National Championships.

Tiny Coach Seamus giving Cole Steele - brother of longtime athlete Kash - some mid-race support after a crash at Pedal Palooza.

Our athletes, families and - are always listening. And getting better because of it. 👊🏼 We focus on embracing the “everybody sweeps the shed” mantra of the New Zealand All Blacks - raising the group as a whole!

This bit of wisdom reminds us of the importance of perspective and creating the right mindset in the pursuit of our goals.

That’s because the challenges we face can either make us stronger and more skilled… or influence us to stagnate and retreat.

The Irish are reminding us to face challenges with gusto and to welcome “rough-waters” as an opportunity to become better at our craft.

Whether it’s the summer swelter that is creating a turbulent sea or the headwinds of back-to-school/work commitments, don’t forget that with the right perspective, the challenges we face can be the springboard to better days and great performances.

Athlete Highlight: Raylan Levy has overcome his share of adversity this season in the form of injuries and never lost sight of his big season targets. Raylan competed in both Road Nationals and MTB Nationals all with a smile on his face!

Despite the vastly different aspects of the sport, off-road and on, Raylan never let skill be an issue that defined his performance. It has taken many hours of riding but Raylan has developed the skill, confidence, and nuance to compete against the countries best roadies and MTB hammerheads all in the same season, an accomplishment that is nothing short of spectacular at such a young age.

Congratulations Ray-Ray, we couldn’t be more proud of you! Thank you for inspiring us to enjoy our two wheeled steeds on the dirt and on the open roads!

Amidst a focus on performance we cannot forget to have a bunch of fun, as we work toward our goals!

It is well documented that success in sport, and in life, takes dedication, hard work, and focus…

But that doesn’t mean fun cannot be had in training, at the races, and throughout our time in sport!

So this week, and all summer long, don’t forget to keep things fun, as we are sure Mr Branson would agree, it’s sure to lead to better Fall fitness!

Athlete Highlight: We had a blast at Sierra Eastside MTB Assoc. Pedal Palooza just a few weeks ago! The course was epic, the racing was stiff, and the mountain air was crisp!

From leading pre-rides and a BWC Family Dinner, to a full race day complete podiums as well as a catered lunch, not to mention finishing the weekend with our SEMBA friends on a Sunday Fun-Day ride to enjoy one more opportunity to take some of Mammoths amazing views…

We are already looking forward to next years event!

Thank you Pedal Palooza for a great time, it’s already on our calendar for next year!

Despite the marvels of the internet, Photo-Shop, and A.I., real progress is realized at a modest tempo.

This bit of ancient wisdom reminds us that despite a desire for quick fixes and fast results, true progress comes slowly and as a result of diligent effort.

But the underlying theme here is about being content with progress of any quantity, because the real “bummer” is stagnation.

So maybe a good goal for this week is to both achieve and celebrate some “slow growth”…

Athlete Highlight: Our BWC squad was small but mighty out in Virginia at the USA Cycling MTB National Championships.

The “road” to nationals was built on steady progress that started many months earlier. It took a lot of hard work and dedication for our squad to build their championship fitness, but they were rewarded with success all week long.

BWC Athletes brought home six championship jerseys, many strong performances, and one very note worthy podium finish.

We couldn’t be more proud of our National Championship campaign, and our team is small, but mighty!

Chapeaux team!

Mr Franklin’s formula is a simple one, but as the summer heat hits its height, this wisdom is worth remembering.

Building and maintaining fitness is a balancing act of competing priorities at any point in the year, but it always seems to be a bit more complicated to stay strong through the summer.

That’s where the emphasis on the “persistence” component of this quote comes in.

Whether it’s shorter workouts, early morning roll-outs, or linking up with local group rides to keep our energies high, maintaining consistent training this summer will lead to a more fun Fall!

Athlete Highlight: Charlie Marinko has been “Mr Consistent” throughout the year, but somehow he has managed to -turn it up a notch- this summer translating the longer days and warmer weather into solid summer fitness!

And this weekend at the Rim Nordic MTB series he got to show that fitness off, earning a well-deserved 3rd place finish!

It’s not easy to head up to altitude and compete in the thin air, but Charlie did just that, pacing himself well and improving with each lap on the course.

It was a performance to be proud of and a result earned through consistency.

Way to go Charlie, we are super proud of you, Buddy!

Weekend Wrap-up at Mountain Bike National Championships!

Coach sealed the trip up by winning the XCO (cross country) 40-44 title in style!

This win brought our gold medal count to 6 for the weekend, with an added Bronze medal for 7 medals total.

We had 10 athletes racing in VA - each with their unique stories, journeys and results. We are very proud of each of them for making the trip from CA, being committed to the training to get here, and executing on race day!

Rest up and into the next targets!
