AWAKEN - Afghan Women's And Kids' Education & Necessities

AWAKEN - Afghan Women's And Kids' Education & Necessities Our mission is to provide women and children in rural Afghanistan with educational assistance, vocational training and healthcare services

AWAKEN was incorporated as a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization in 2002. All donations are tax-deductible and 98.3% goes to the cause. Our goal is to enable Afghan women and children to become healthy, literate, and self-sufficient. We have established the Qala-E-Malakh School, Behsood Health Clinic, and multiple vocational centers. THE QALA-E-MALAKH SCHOOL in the Behsood District opened in 2004 to 230 children in grades one through six. With the completion of several additional classrooms since 2009, the school now educates 1,350 children and teens in grades one through twelve. AWAKEN also provides university scholarships to graduates of the school. THE VOCATIONAL TRAINING program has offered tailoring instruction and literacy and hygiene education for women since 2005. Each graduate receives a sewing machine and supplies to help support herself and her family. Now in its tenth year, the program travels from village to village, each year giving dozens of rural women practical skills that address their families’ needs. THE BEHSOOD HEALTH CLINIC, which opened in 2008, now treats more than 3,000 rural patients each month. Its focus is on the care of women and children, who are typically among the most vulnerable in Afghanistan. One current goal at the clinic is to create and staff a Birthing Center, which will serve the needs of expectant mothers and newborns at any hour of the day or night, seven days a week.

When Zainab went into labor, she wasn't just facing childbirth—she was facing uncertainty.

"My name is Zainab, I am 28 years old, and I live in Daman village, Behsud District. I was ill as a child, and close to my delivery time, I faced severe pain, fear, and difficulties. The pain was so intense that I was in a lot of discomfort. I couldn’t afford to go to any clinic in the city for delivery."

As labor began, her family rushed her to AWAKEN's Qala-e-Mulakh Clinic.

"The clinic’s midwife and medical team gave me proper care and helped me with a normal delivery. I gave birth to a healthy baby girl. Now, both my baby and I are in perfect health."

For mothers like Zainab, access to skilled medical care can mean the difference between life and death—for both mother and child.

"I am very thankful to the AWAKEN Organization for building this clinic for us. Many poor families like ours have had their problems solved. Thank you."

Every day, AWAKEN's clinics provide life-saving care to mothers and babies who would otherwise have little or no access to healthcare.

When you give, you're helping ensure more mothers receive safe deliveries, more babies enter the world healthy, and more families experience hope instead of fear.

Will you help another mother like Zainab?

After her husband passed away from a heart attack, Gul Mina suddenly found herself carrying the weight of an entire household alone.

"My name is Gul Mina, and I live in Behsud District. I have four children. My husband passed away due to a heart attack. After his death, I became the head of the household, but there was no relative to help us. Life became very difficult for me. Eventually, I had to start washing people’s clothes in the village to meet the family’s needs."

For a mother of four, every day became a struggle to provide food, stability, and hope for her children. Then AWAKEN stepped in.

"However, fortunately, the AWAKEN Charity Organization found out about my situation and added my name to their list of widows receiving assistance. They provide me with cash every month, and since then, my life has become easier and better, and my problems have been solved."

Today, Gul Mina and her children are no longer facing the future alone.

"I pray for and thank the leadership and all the staff of the AWAKEN Organization. Now, my children and I are living a happy and peaceful life."

Stories like Gul Mina's are possible because of our generous donors. Your donation helps provide practical support and hope to widows and vulnerable families who are working to rebuild their lives after unimaginable loss.

To everyone who attended, gave, volunteered, sponsored, or supported from afar—thank you. Your generosity is helping create opportunities and hope for women and families in Afghanistan.

The annual dinner is more than a fundraiser. It is a reminder of the meaningful change that is possible when people come together to support something bigger than themselves.

Dear Friends,
Today, we’re honored to share a meaningful piece of AWAKEN’s history.

For over 15 years, our founder and president, Bibi Bahrami, has proudly served on the board of the Center for Peace and Conflict Studies at Ball State University. This role is deeply personal to her, as peacebuilding is not only central to her life’s work, but also rooted in her faith. Peace is a fundamental value in Islam, and one she strives to live out every day.

Bibi also played an important role in the creation of the Peace Plaza at Ball State University, located near the Miller College of Business. The plaza continues to grow as a symbol of unity, most recently with the addition of the “Asia Pole,” part of a vision to represent all seven continents and reflect the shared humanity of people around the world.

We are also proud to look back on a special milestone. 10 years ago, AWAKEN received a Certificate of Appreciation in recognition of our contributions to the Benjamin V. Cohen Peace Conference. This honor reflects our ongoing commitment to promoting peace, and serving our community in Muncie and Afghanistan.

As we reflect on this journey, we remain committed to building bridges, fostering understanding, and serving humanity together.

Dear Friends of AWAKEN,
We are deeply grateful to everyone who joined us for the dinner, supported us from afar, and kept us in their prayers. Because of all of you, the evening was a success. We’re honored to share these special moments with all of you.

This year, our annual Pat Schaefer Award was proudly presented to Barbara Stedman and Martha Hunt in recognition of their outstanding joint contributions to the community. This award honors individuals who have made an extraordinary impact on the population AWAKEN serves, and who embody a deep passion for service, along with a commitment to respect, diversity, and inclusion.

Over the past 24 years, so many of you have supported AWAKEN in meaningful ways. Each of you is deserving of this recognition, but we can only select one individual or family to honor to represent the spirit and dedication of our entire community.

This year the board surprised our Founder and President, Bibi Bahrami, with the prestigious Distinguished Hoosier award, presented by Sue Errington on behalf of governor Mike Braun. This award is given out to one special Hoosier each year who have made significant contributions to the state or brought honor to Indiana through their actions, character, leadership, and service.
