As March is Women’s History Month, I wish to honor the extraordinary contributions of women in jazz—artists whose creativity, resilience, and innovation have helped shape the music from its earliest days to the present.

From pioneering figures like Mary Lou Williams, whose compositions and mentorship influenced generations, and Billie Holiday, whose voice redefined how jazz was sung, to bandleaders such as Melba Liston, women have long been central to the evolution of jazz.

Instrumentalists and composers including Carla Bley and Gerri Allen have expanded the music’s boundaries with their artistic vision, while vocalists like Ella Fitzgerald and Sarah Vaughan set enduring standards of excellence.

Today, artists such as Esperanza Spalding and Terri Lyne Carrington continue to carry the tradition forward with originality and depth.

Though their contributions have not always received equal recognition, women in jazz have remained vital architects of the art form. This month offers an opportunity not only to celebrate their achievements, but also to listen more closely to the voices that have always been at the heart of jazz.

This 1948 photo (courtesy of FPG Archive and Getty Images) has preserved a meeting of the minds among several of these great pioneers: Mary Lou Williams on piano, Vivien Garry on bass, Bridget O’Flynn on drums, Mary Osborne on guitar, and Margie Hyams on vibraphone. What a band!
