Snow days = magic and mayhem ❄️😅
Out-of-routine days can be exciting and dysregulating, especially for kids who thrive on predictability. A few simple strategies can help everyone stay a little more grounded today and tomorrow while we are all snowed in:
🧠 Anchor the day
Even if everything else changes, keep a few things the same (wake-up routine, meals, favorite snack time, bedtime cues). Familiar anchors help kids feel safe when the day looks different.
⏱️ Alternate movement + calm
Snow play is BIG input! Try a rhythm of:
• Outdoor play
• Warm-up + snack
• Calm activity (books, drawing, puzzles)
• Repeat as needed
This helps avoid the “wired but tired” spiral.
🧤 Prep before heading outside
Talk through what snow play will look like before you go out:
“When we go out, it will be cold but the snow can be fun! Do you want to (provide a guided choice that YOU are in control of what you would like to do with them) sled or make a snow man, make angels or spell your name, etc.”
And prior to coming back in, talk through what that will look like before you make it inside: “ We will come in, we’ll take boots off, have hot chocolate, then rest.”
Predictability = regulation.
🛋️ Create a cozy reset space
Blankets, dim lights, favorite shows, quiet toys: this isn’t “giving in,” it’s helping nervous systems recover.
💛 Lower the bar (for everyone)
Perfect snow-day memories are overrated. Safe, fed, connected is more than enough.
And parents, if things feel harder today and tomorrow, you’re not doing anything wrong. Snow days are a lot. We see you.
Stay warm, stay safe, and we’ll be back in routine soon 🤍
