The way we perceive others and define success can shape the way we move through the world. It is shaped by the assumptions we question, the effort we choose to value, and the possibilities we allow ourselves to see.

This week on the Avaz blog, we explore two thoughtful reflections: one on how our perceptions can shape the way we see and respond to people, and another on redefining success by looking beyond outcomes and recognising the value of effort, growth, and resilience.

Because sometimes, changing the way we see others and ourselves can change what we believe is possible.

Let’s bust another AAC myth! 💭

AAC isn’t something you need to wait for.

It can be introduced early, giving people a way to communicate while their language continues to grow. AAC can also be used alongside speech therapy and other communication supports.

Everyone deserves access to communication from the start, not only after other approaches have been tried.💙

Kinda chic to have Avaz AAC that gives you more ways to express. 💅💛

What happens when you ask us to simplify AAC?

You might expect an easy answer.

Instead, you might get questions, different perspectives, and a deeper conversation about what “simple” really means.

For this blog, we brought together perspectives from within the Avaz team to explore the thinking behind how we build and design AAC. It’s less about giving you one answer and more about showing you the conversations that help shape our work.

What comes first when choosing AAC: the device or the language system?

The Specific Language System First approach starts with the language system and the student’s communication needs, not the device.

For schools, this approach can support more consistent implementation, better AAC modelling, smoother transitions, and more time for training and learning.

At the same time, individual assessment still matters. A shared approach should never mean one-size-fits-all support.

Let’s clear up another AAC myth. 💭

A common misconception is that AAC is only needed until a person can communicate their basic needs.

But communication goes far beyond “I want” or “I need.”

AAC can support people in expressing thoughts, feelings, ideas, opinions, and experiences, giving them more opportunities to participate, connect, and share what’s on their mind.

Because communication isn’t just about having needs met. It’s about having a voice, being understood, and being part of the conversation. 💙

Back to School brings new classrooms, new routines, and new expectations. For students who use AAC, these changes can make communication more challenging as they adjust to new people and new environments.

Simple, consistent supports can make those first few weeks easier. Planning key vocabulary, practising routines, and creating opportunities to communicate can help students build confidence and participate from day one.

This infographic highlights simple ways to support communication during the transition back to school.

Let's clear up another AAC myth. 💭

One of the biggest concerns we hear is that using AAC will reduce a person's motivation to speak.

The evidence tells a different story.

AAC doesn't take speech away. It gives people a way to communicate while supporting language development. When communication is accessible, there's less frustration, more participation, and more opportunities to connect with the people around them.

Every way of communicating deserves to be valued. And for many AAC users, having another way to express themselves is exactly what opens the door to communication.
