When asked about her FGLI experience, Amanda Anastasia Paniagua said, “I started undergrad in May 2005 but didn’t graduate with my bachelor's until May 2012. Yes, it took me seven years and transferring to two different institutions. I used to be ashamed of that fact but now I can look back and be proud that, despite the many obstacles and setbacks, I never gave up. In fact, I graduated with honors and then went on to complete two master’s programs. Being a first-generation and limited income college graduate provided me an understanding of the highs and lows that many students at Wooster are facing right now. This identity has also humbled me to never forget where I came from and what I’ve been through. As such, it is vitally important to me to give back to the first-generation student community in any way that I can. My advice to you is to not be afraid to ask for help and guidance from faculty and staff. We exist to help you be successful! I know that being first-generation and or limited income can feel overwhelming and lonely at times, but know that you are not alone, and that investing in your education and you will open new doors and opportunities. I’m truly blessed to do the work that I do and to be part of your journey. Let’s chat sometime; my inbox is always open: [email protected]

The recent quarantine gave FGLI students no notice for the ability to go collect affordable basics and left many students food insecure. We have created a survey to collect the experiences of all students in relation to this food insecurity, and intend to use the results to advocate for some quick changes.
Please take a moment to fill out this very short, 4-question survey. (posted by Savannah Sima)

Since FGLI students were not given ample time to collect basics before being told to not leave campus, FGSO wanted to survey our community on the demand of groceries. I know how many are likely to stay silent about food insecurity or needing anything, so these are general questions to try and enact....

Julius Higginbotham is Wooster’s Assistant Track & Field Coach and Recruiting Coordinator. When asked what being first-gen means to them, they said “I arrived on campus in 2013 as a dual sport coach. I was given the opportunity to coach football in the fall and track & field in the spring. I began to interact with students from all across the world from different economic backgrounds. Like myself – every student has a unique story behind their journey to college. I began to see that there were many students that would share a very similar background as me. Being a first-generation college student, I was faced with many challenges. I was not sure how student loans and financial aid worked. There were times I did not have money for books and was not able to register for classes due to unpaid fees. I did not know what degree to pursue and even challenged the true benefit of a college education. When times were hard, I would reach out to multiple people around campus that I considered mentors. Those interactions were key moments for me. The tables have turned and now I am the mentor. I am ready to help lead the next generation of college graduates. With a special place in my heart for first- generation, limited income students.

Since my hire I have transitioned to a full-time track & field coach and Intramural Director. Wooster has provided many opportunities to grow as a professional. I am part of the staff committee, representing academic affairs and staff ARCHER for the summer ARCH program for first-year students. It is in these special moments of introducing students to college I get to interact personally with them and build relationships.”

Today students received notification that computer labs will be closed without prior reservation and public computers were removed from the libraries. With this in mind, utilization of the laptop lending program will be important to a lot of students. Please fill out the request form linked in our bio if you will need a reliable laptop to complete schoolwork this fall. You can also reach out to the Dean of Students office directly. Thank you to Dean Hernández and Dr. García for ensuring and restructuring the lending program to streamline access for students.
