What if the most important thing a school gave your child wasn’t a grade… but the confidence to become the person God created them to be?

Meet Caitlin Brown ('22).

Today, Caitlin serves as the State Communications Director for Citizens for Free Enterprise while also running her own photography business, capturing senior portraits, couples, and concerts through her company, Caitlin with the Cam.

But when she reflects on her time at Living Science, she doesn’t talk first about academics or career preparation.

She talks about finding the confidence to stop living according to everyone else’s expectations and start embracing the person God created her to be.

Through friendships, teachers, and the school's close-knit community, she learned that she didn't have to fit into someone else's mold or constantly worry about what others thought. -“It was a massive breath of fresh air."

One memory still stands out years later... During High School Retreat, Caitlin had spent much of the week feeling like she didn't have close friends. As students were leaving, one servant leader stepped out of line, gave her a hug, and told her they were grateful they had gotten to know her.

That simple moment changed her perspective. She realized she had been so focused on her own doubts that she hadn't seen the impact she was having on the people around her.

Today, Caitlin is passionate about using photography and media to share her faith and inspire others through the Gospel.

Her story is a reminder that education is about more than preparing students for a career.

It's about helping them discover who they are, build meaningful relationships, and develop the confidence to live out the unique calling God has placed on their lives.

The things families remember most about Living Science aren't usually found in a brochure.

It's students gathered around in the kitchen at lunch.

It's conversations that continue long after class is over.

It's friends working together in the living room.

It's the feeling of walking into a place that feels more like home than a school building.

One of the things people notice when they visit Living Science is that our campus doesn't look like a traditional school. And that's part of what makes it special.

For many students, it's a place where they feel known. Where relationships matter. Where learning happens naturally through community, conversation, and shared experiences.

Because education is about more than academics.

It's about creating an environment where students can grow in knowledge, character, faith, and friendship.

Sometimes the most important parts of a school experience aren't found in a classroom at all.

Some summer vacations involve a hotel. Others involve 14 days on the Appalachian Trail.

This month, the Ross Wiseman family set off on their next big adventure, backpacking a section of the Appalachian Trail with their children, Arden and Maverick.

As they hike through the Roan Highlands, they'll experience breathtaking views, tackle new challenges, and make memories that will last a lifetime.

One of the things we love about homeschooling is that learning, family, and adventure aren't separate parts of life. They're woven together.

A trail becomes a science lesson. A mountain view inspires wonder. A challenge builds character. A shared experience strengthens family bonds.

That's part of what makes this lifestyle so special.

At Living Science, we love seeing families embrace opportunities to explore God's creation, grow together, and discover that some of life's most meaningful lessons happen far beyond the walls of a classroom.

What happens when a student is challenged to grow in both character and knowledge?

For Living Science alumnus Thomas Lovin ('21), the answer isn't found in a single class, grade, or achievement. It's found in the kind of person he is becoming.

When Thomas looks back on his time at Living Science, what stands out most isn't one particular event. It's the sense of community.

"Whether it was classes, expeditions, retreats, or simply spending time with friends, there was always an environment that encouraged growth, adventure, and meaningful relationships."

Those experiences helped shape a student who was willing to embrace challenges, pursue excellence, invest in relationships, and keep God at the center of his life.

Today, Thomas is putting those qualities to work as a Software Support Engineer for Inductive Automation in California. Recently, he was selected as one of only four engineers to represent his company in a new customer success video.

Thomas credits Living Science's hybrid model with helping him develop the independence, responsibility, and self-discipline that prepared him for both college and career. He also points to teachers who challenged and encouraged him along the way. The student who once found math difficult went on to take courses in Discrete Mathematics and Cryptography, building on foundations first laid in Living Science classrooms.

Yet some of his favorite memories happened far from a desk.

He remembers his freshman High School Retreat as a time of adventure, friendship, learning, and spiritual growth. A chance to observe God's creation, deepen relationships, and step away from the distractions of everyday life.

Today, Thomas continues to pursue growth both professionally and personally. He's passionate about solving complex problems, helping others succeed, investing in relationships, and growing in his faith.

In his words, he's still working toward living up to the potential that Mr. and Mrs. D saw in him years ago.

That's the heart of Living Science.

Not simply preparing students for what they'll do, but helping them discover who God created them to become.

There are field trips… and then there is Expedition.

Once a year, our middle school students leave the classroom behind and head to the shores of Georgia for five unforgettable days hands-on learning.

During Expedition, students don’t just study science — they experience it.

They build beach models of coastal ecozones, design and fly tetrahedral kites to explore principles of flight, launch rockets, dissect sea creatures, and seine the ocean waters while weighing and measuring their catch.

But Expedition is about more than academics. Each evening, students gather for powerful worship followed by engaging drama and science presentations. Through every lesson, activity, and conversation, students are reminded of the wonder of God’s creation and His incredible plan for redemption.

Expedition has become a defining experience for many of our students — a week filled with laughter, friendships, discovery, worship, and memories that last far beyond middle school.

Hybrid Homeschool For Living Science | Living Science Academy Living Science Academy is a Christian hybrid homeschool in Woodstock, GA, providing STEM and other academic classes for students from 2nd Grade to high school.

Not every school lets you bring a pony for your oral presentation.

But before Patches made his appearance, there was a lot of work behind the scenes.

At Living Science, students begin developing presentation skills in elementary school, learning how to research a topic, organize their ideas, create visuals, and confidently share what they've learned with others.

For one of our students, that process centered around something she loves: horses. After digging through stacks of books, creating her visual display, and even practicing her presentation for an audience of stuffed animals and empty chairs, she was ready for the big day.

And yes... she brought her family pony, Patches, to school as part of her presentation.

We love seeing students combine academic skills with their unique interests and passions. Because when learning is personal, it becomes memorable.

At Living Science, education is more than memorizing facts. It's helping students develop confidence, communication skills, curiosity, and a lifelong love of learning.

(And apparently, there's now talk of a kangaroo next year. Stay tuned.)

Our elementary students put creativity, engineering, and a little bit of explosive science into action during Derby Day! Using recycled plastic bottles, baking soda, vinegar, and lots of imagination, students designed and raced their very own rocket-powered.

As the vinegar and baking soda reacted, carbon dioxide gas was created, building pressure and launching the cars forward like mini rockets!

At Living Science, learning is not confined to a worksheet. Students discover science by building, experimenting, testing ideas, and cheering each other on along the way. From design challenges to hands-on discovery, moments like these help students see that science is something they can experience, create, and enjoy.

And yes… there were definitely some dramatic crashes, surprise victories, and very excited racers along the way.
