Today, on National Lifeguard Appreciation Day, we pause to recognize the incredible individuals who stand watch over our pools and waterfronts each and every day.

Being a lifeguard is about so much more than sitting in a chair. It requires extensive training, constant vigilance, quick decision-making, physical endurance, and an unwavering commitment to the safety of others. Every scan of the water, every preventative action, every drill, and every certification represents a promise to protect the lives entrusted to their care.

At the Gloucester County YMCA and across the YMCA of the Pines, our lifeguards embody our core values of Caring, Honesty, Respect, Responsibility, Inclusion, and Courage. Whether they’re stationed on the tower, roving the deck, responding to emergencies, making sure our campers are safe, or simply offering a reassuring smile to a nervous swimmer, they make a difference every single day.

Today, we’d like to extend our deepest gratitude to every member of our aquatics team. From our CEO, who is also a certified lifeguard and leads by example to champion a culture of safety, to our Aquatics Coordinator, whose leadership, training, and mentorship prepare our team for success, to every lifeguard who proudly wears the red uniform and serves our members and campers with professionalism and heart—thank you! 🫶🏽

Did you know that drowning is one of the leading causes of accidental death for children, and that swim lessons can significantly reduce that risk?

As we recognize World Drowning Prevention Day on July 31, we are reminded that learning to swim is more than a life skill - it’s a lifesaving skill.

At the Gloucester County YMCA, we believe it’s never too early or too late to learn. We offer swim lessons for all ages, starting at 6 months old through adulthood.

🌊 Whether you’re introducing your baby to the water, helping your child build confidence, or finally checking “learn to swim” off your own bucket list, we’re here to support every step of the journey.
