🎃 Spooky season is here, but if you're a baker, don't be spooked by these 5 cookie biz myths! Wanna grow your cookie box? Join the Sugar Cookie Marketing (Group) to learn more!

☠️ 1. Myth: You need a lot of followers to make sales on social media

You don't actually need a ton of social media followers to make cookie sales. Followers don't equal social media post reach. Reaching more people with your pre-sale posts, cookie class announcements and custom order cookies will get you more sales in 2026, not more followers.

☠️ 2. Myth: You have to have a curated feed to grow on social media platforms

It isn't 2020 anymore. You do NOT need a perfectly curated feed and staged photos to make sales. I will say, good photos help, but a candid photo of your cookies on the baking sheet or a selfie of you finishing up a big order can outperform the best feed out there.

☠️ 3. Myth: You have to post at certain times to game the algorithms

Your social profiles will tell you the best time of day to post, but don't let that hold you back from making content just because it isn't being posted at the perfect moment.

Posting with your audience in mind is great, but it shouldn't be the single rule you post by. Sometimes your late-night baking post can get you more reach because it's relateable vs posting only at Fridays at 3:01 pm.

☠️ 4. Myth: The algos will not show content unless you post daily

You don't have to post every day to avoid being "shadow banned" by the algos. Instead, focus on posting with a purpose. Ask yourself, "What is my goal with this post?". Is it creating a relationship? Being a local resource? Adding value? Posting with strategy beats posting just to post.

☠️ 5. Myth: AI can make better captions and content than bakers can

AI may be able to create perfectly worded paragraphs, but it is far from being able to be you. We are all buying from the same cutter shops and creating the same designs. You are the reason people will skip the baker down the street and choose to buy from you and not them.

The way your talk, type and explain things makes you stand out from the rest. Don't be drowned out of your sales because you sound like everyone else using AI.

🤯 Lastly, don't forget to join the Sugar Cookie Marketing Facebook Group. It's the number 1 place for sugar cookie bakers to learn how to market their businesses.

Each day we discuss trending cookie designs, social media updates, how to get customers and how to become more efficient so you can do more with your time.

😩 It's hard out there in them content creation streets, that's why I'm going to share 5 content ideas that have worked for me and will work for you.

🤫 Ps: If you're a new cookie baker and haven't joined the Sugar Cookie Marketing Facebook Group yet, what are you waiting for? We talk algos, social posts, reach and more all in there every single day! Click hereSugar Cookie Marketing (Group) or the link and join the conversation and grow your cookie business.

➡️ 1. The algos like videos so we need to make them. Easier said than done though! That's why a baby step into video creation can just be you packaging a set for a client. I use InShot to edit my videos and it's easy to take the sound out and have it ready to upload to social media. Right now, the ideal length is 30 seconds (to hold attention) so aim for somewhere around there!

➡️ 2. Add value into why you charge what you charge by showcasing the tools of the trade you've invested in. Your heat-sealer shows that your cookie freshness is top priority. Your dehydrator shows that you can take last minute orders. Let them see behind your bakin' curtain and show them what goes into making cookies a business.

➡️ 3. Show the BTS process. An inquiry comes in from your form, you start planning out designs. Go to your cutter storage area and find the perfect gel colors to accommodate the theme. This adds value to your potential clients and is something we already have to do on every order- so show it!

➡️ 4. Show what your clients sent in as inspo or invites in a collage with what you created. This not only adds value, but shows what you can do when it comes to cookie orders. I use InShot's collage feature to make these quickly and they are always a hit.

➡️ 5. You're local, so show that you're local. You don't have to bake one thing for this, but you will become a local resource for those who might not be ready to buy, but you want to stay top of their feeds for when they do. A local playground upgrade, a hidden gem of a coffee house or where the Spirit Halloween is popping up at- all this ties you to your local area and keeps people checking out your profiles.

➡️ 6. Join the Sugar Cookie Marketing Facebook Group. 50k bakers check in every day learning ways to grow their bakery businesses by seeing trends, learning new apps, figuring out updates, and coming together in 1 place with 1 goal- growing their bakery businesses.

👟 Big Shoes Battle - How to compete with the big bakers.

In this week's Baking it Down Podcast - Episode 275 - Big Shoes Battle, we're back on our beginner baker series, and good news - even if you're new and it feels like you're takin' on the Big Dog Bakers who have been in the space for 5+ years, you can still play ball.

Here are five ways that being the underdog actually gives you the home-field advantage over more established bakers regarding your marketing approach.

👟 Followers Don't Matter.

Ten years ago, we wouldn't be able to tell you that followers were just a made-up number that doesn't affect marketing. Today we can tell you that. Yes, having a base of followers adds social proof and signals to a customer that you aren't a made-up cookie business out to steal their money and disappear into the abyss.

But you can now reach far more than your follower count - it's the plus side of algorithm-based reach. So even if you have 100 followers, a quality post that reaches the right audience has the potential to reach thousands of would-be clients. Post in a local Facebook group, and their followers are now wide open to your reach - and you didn't even have to make and run a Facebook group.

The potential to reach more in your audience has never been higher - and you don't have to get 1,000,000 followers to do it (remember when you could only reach the people who followed your page??).

👟 No group tags? Tag yourself.

If you're new to baking, you're not going to get as many tags as a more established baker with a long-term network of referrals and word-of-mouth. But guess what? You can be your biggest fan right out of the gate. Put the blinders on if seeing the other baker tags affects you negatively, but always tag yourself. And be honest about it too. None of this, "I hear [myself] is a really great baker!"

Approach it this way: "Hey Mary! I'm Corrie with Mixing Bowl Cookies [tag page], and I'd love to have the chance to work with you on your event! Here's a picture of a set I've done similar to what you're looking for. If you want to work together on this, here's how to get started [how they place an order with you]." Don't forget to include a picture, emojis, and line breaks.

👟 No email list? Start now.

A small but engaged email list = better than a large email list that the seasoned baker has forgotten to email for over a year (55% of bakers said they haven't emailed their audience in the last 12 months).

A quick win for a new baker - starting (and staying consistent with) an email list. Email is the final frontier of chronological order, and even if the clients don't open it (20% is the industry open rate standard), they still saw your brand and know you exist for their next order.

👟 No incoming orders? Make content.

That big baker who is fully booked doesn't have time to make content that could go viral, get shared, or reach that next order from someone who otherwise wouldn't know you exist. While they're busy baking it up in the kitchen, you get busy recording content. In the world of Reels, you can quickly grow an audience just from a few decently performing vertical videos.

Stream this week's pod to see our solution for bakers who are so new, they have no reviews. Yep - you can take the big dogs on here too!
