The LEO Program - Wood County, WI

The LEO Program - Wood County, WI The LEO Program is state approved program available to all youth ages 12-20 in Wood County, WI. LEO stands for Learn & Empower Oneself.

LEO empowers youth with practical tools to understand their brains and quickly improve resilience, adaptability, and fearlessness in a rapidly changing world. The LEO Program is a state-approved interactive resilience building program for youth ages 12-20 in Wood County, WI. The mission of The LEO Program is to empower youth to understand their unique brains and quickly improve resilience, adaptab

ility, and fearlessness in a rapidly changing world. Resilience is the ability to bounce back and/or forward during challenging circumstances. Resilience helps individuals recover from setbacks, adapt well to change and keep going in the face of adversity. LEO explores how the human brain works and why our brain is not prepared for the challenges of today’s world. Our lower brain, also known as the survival brain, dominants our day to day life. LEO challenges participants to use different tools and strategies like mindfulness, breathing, gratitude, and more to rewire their brains. By rewiring their brains, they are able to demonstrate improved leadership, creative problem solving, stress management, and become resilient. The LEO Program is funded through the Brighter Futures Initiative Grant through the Wisconsin Department of Children and Families. LEO is operated by professional staff from CW Solutions in partnership with Wood County Human Services. Program curriculum is adapted from the Life Ecology Organization, founded by Dr. Niraj Nijhawan. LEO began operating in Wood County in January 2019 with funding renewed in January 2022.

We've all heard of our survival instincts fight, flight, and freeze, but what do they actually look like in our everyday lives? "Fight" can look like a lot more than just throwing punches, and "flight" isn't just running away. For example, did you know that procrastination is a form of flight and freezing can look like daydreaming? Take a look at the image below for more examples of how these survival instincts show up!

Our lower brain will keep us stuck in one perspective and convince us that we're right. The higher brain helps us see our experiences differently and step outside the lens of our past. What we see and how we interpret it depends on the context that we're given. Often, when our context changes, so does our perspective. What do you see in the picture below?

Connection and relationships are survival needs.
Without having friends in your corner to talk to, brain storm with, problem solve with, learn with, celebrate with, and grieve with, the lower brain knows it's missing something vital to life.
Without friendship, cortisol levels rise and the lower brain activates.
With friendship to other people, animals, and family members dopamine rises in a healthy, slow and steady way helping the higher brain grow strong connections to the lower brain!
Over here at LEO Headquarters we hope you have the opportunity to spend time with your friends and make joyful memories!!!

Have you always wanted to learn a new skill or hobby, but just never got around to doing it? It's not too late, and if you can do it in a fun and creative way, turns you can learn it pretty quick! It takes about 400 repetitions of doing something new before the brain really learns how to do it. Unless we learn through play. In which case it only takes 20 repetitions to learn something new. We challenge you to start learning today!
