Did you know Notaries can notarize hand written documents? Documents like wills, deed, contracts etc can be notarized even if they are handwritten. A notarial certificate must accompany the document. As a Notary, I will work with you to determine which certificate is appropriate for the document. Keep in mind Notaries are verifying your signature, not legality of the document itself. As you know,there are many thing notary publics can do. However, one thing we cannot do is notarize documents like birth, marriage or death certificates. Why not, Barb? Glad you asked! These type of documents are considered to be vital records, which are kept by certain government agencies. ONLY that agency can make what is considered a certified copy and therefore only that agency can notarize these vital records. However, a request for a copy of the vital record can be notarized providing the request meets all notary criteria.
As an aside, a birth certificate cannot be considered a reliable form of identification by a Notary because there is no way to verify a signature or photo identification. Now you know.
