The Citizenship Initiative

The Citizenship Initiative The Citizenship Initiative is an outreach project enabled by the support of Florida New Americans and Rollins College students

There are close to a million permanent legal residents in the state of Florida who are eligible for citizenship but have not applied for it. Without citizenship, there is no right to vote. Without the right to vote, there is no fair representation. Barriers keeping legal residents from changing their status include misinformation about the complexity of the application process as well as its dura

tion. Lack of access to free legal advice is another obstacle. We need to engage in an information campaign to enable all those who contribute to making America great the enjoyment of their democratic rights. Professor Julia Maskivker's classes on democracy and citizenship at Rollins College and immigration reform advocate Melissa McGuire-Maniau have partnered with Florida New Americans and the Florida Immigration Coalition to design and implement a Legal Permanent Resident Outreach Project in Florida. If you know any permanent resident who is eligible for citizenship and would like to participate of this initiative please let us know
