On Tuesday, November 10, we have a very special and unique opportunity to be part of an important free event in Orlando, which is sponsored by the BYU Law School’s International Center for Law and Religion Studies.
The Director of the Center, W. Cole Durham will be here in Orlando as the headline speaker at the “Protecting Religious Freedom: An Interfaith Event”. Since the fall of the Iron Curtain, Professor Durham has been instrumental in drafting constitutions and laws in the emerging Eastern European democracies that protect and guarantee religious freedom. Professor Durham, and the Center’s work have helped make possible the official recognition of the LDS Church and other denominations in various countries and have opened the doors for missionary work. Professor Durham and the Center are currently the major player in laying the foundations for religious freedom in China and Vietnam. Professor Durham has a distinguished legal career and has been active in defending and promoting religious freedom in the US and before the US Supreme Court.
He is also offering a Youth Fireside on Sunday, Nov. 8 at 7:00pm at the Orlando Stake Center on Par Ave. We hope our youth will attend.
At the community event on November 10, Professor Durham will speak together with a prominent Jewish legal scholar from Emory University, lead pastors from some of the largest Baptist, Presbyterian, and Evangelical Christian churches in Central Florida, and the head Imam of the Central Florida Islamic Society.
This is a groundbreaking event where we have the opportunity to stand together as people of ALL faiths and learn how to protect religious freedom as a fundamental human right that protects the conscience of all people.
Around the world, and in the United States, this freedom is being challenged. Churches, religious organizations and individuals face increasing restrictions as they participate in the public square, express their beliefs or serve in society.
The “Protecting Religious Freedom: An Interfaith Event” is on Tuesday, November 10, at 7:30pm at the First Baptist Orlando Church, located just off I-4 and John Young Parkway. We invite you to share this event on social media and invite people of other faiths. Free registration is available at Eventbrite.com, then search “Religious Freedom”. Please join us and be part of this historic event.
