This summer, as the German Men’s National Soccer Team prepares for the World Cup, players will be spending their time off the field at the Graylyn Estate, a gorgeous property with historic ties to Wake Forest University. The land was purchased from R.J. Reynolds in 1925, when it was formerly part of the Reynolda Estate, and it is now a thriving luxury hotel in Winston-Salem. Our very warmest congratulations to Ryan Katz, Russian minor and graduating senior! Ryan’s encyclopedic knowledge of geography and grammar always made him the go-to person for obscure facts :) We will miss having him in our classes!

Ryan says: “My favorite memory of Russian at Wake was when we did presentations on movies in Dr. Pribble’s class. We all picked a movie we liked and did a presentation about it in Russian, discussing its plot, the actors, and what we most liked about the movie. I chose to do my presentation on Borat, which I thought was fitting as the character is from a Russian-speaking country. After the presentations we voted on which movie we thought was the best; unfortunately I didn’t win. After graduation I plan to work in D.C. on foreign policy, preferably on Capitol Hill.”

Our very best wishes to Russian minor and graduating senior Polina Sheyner! Polina has been an unfailingly cheerful presence in our classes these past four years, and we will miss her dearly!

Here’s what Polina has to say about studying Russian and her future plans: blurb: “I have truly loved studying Russian over the past four years. Ever since freshman year, this class has given me so many amazing memories, friendships, and experiences that I will always be grateful for. It is so bittersweet to be done, and I’m really going to miss everyone and everything this program brought into my life. I’m excited for my next chapter as I head to the University of Miami School of Law this fall to begin law school, but I will always look back on my time studying Russian so fondly.“

We’re sure you will do great in law school, Polina!
