As our students and Learning Partners get settled into our Fall Semester, we wanted to reintroduce our school to those who may not be familiar. Read and follow along in the upocming weeks as we walk you through what a Forest School is, how PFS began, and the benefits of outdoor, child-led education.

🌿 Halfway through our first week! 🌿
We’ve already had so much fun exploring, discovering, and learning alongside our friends. Today, we took a sensory walk, using our senses to slow down and notice the world around us.
We discovered squishy fungi, spiky gumballs, hardened berries, soft feathers, and birds whose calls seemed to create their own little language. 🍂 Along the way, we practiced tying knots and used our found treasures to create our very own spiky gumball necklaces!
Our walk led us to a grassy field, where the children took it upon themselves to work together to create a huge jumping pile! One by one, they gathered as much as they could, assigned tasks to one another, problem-solved, and turned their idea into a collaborative project. 🌾
Others wandered down to the creek, where they practiced patience and careful observation as they watched the water and used their nets to see what they could discover. 💧
We ended our day together with story time and then shared our own stories of personal bravery—reflecting on the moments when we have been courageous, even when something felt a little scary or challenging. ❤️
Thank you, Forest, for welcoming us into another beautiful day of curiosity, connection, creativity, and discovery. 🌲✨

🌿 First Day Back in the Woods! 🌿
Welcome back to our returning students, and a big hello to our new friends! It was so wonderful to see familiar faces and welcome new ones into the woods. What a beautiful first day of Forest School!
We jumped right into curiosity and discovery, and the forest did not disappoint! 🌱 We spotted deer tracks, green stink bugs, snails of all different sizes, fungi, and listened to the sounds of crickets and cicadas all around us.
Some friends became mud monsters, dirt diggers, and creek explorers, fully embracing the freedom of outdoor play and discovery. 🐌🪵💦
We also found some wonderful opportunities for learning to happen naturally. When a few friends asked how to spell another friend’s name, we sounded out each letter together. By listening to the sounds and figuring them out, they were able to write the name independently—without being given the letters. ✏️❤️
We made music by hammering on a fallen tree, investigated what was hiding beneath its bark, and learned more about pokeweed. Every question, discovery, and moment of wonder became part of our learning.
What a wonderful reminder that in the woods, curiosity leads the way. 🌿
We can’t wait to see where our curiosities take us tomorrow! 🍃

We had a great time this past weekend welcoming our families back with our annual Popsicle Social. Our founder and director Sheri was able to take everyone on a tour of our new basecamps as well as explain what makes our program so special for our LPs and kiddos. We enjoyed popsicles (thank you !) , playing at the splash pad, and participating in our semi-annual gear swap. A couple of friends even found a baby turtle and a toad on our walk into the woods.

We're counting down the days until we see you all for the first day of school!

This summer, our stellar LPs and leadership team got together for a fun day of relaxation and team building with ! It's been an amazing summer but we can't wait to get back in the woods with our kiddos to start the school year. We'll see you soon!
