Mike Rowe has spent years talking about the gap between the opportunities available in the skilled trades and the way those careers are often perceived.

In a recent episode of Shawn Ryan Show, he talks about just how outdated some of those perceptions have become.

Many skilled tradespeople are earning six-figure incomes. Others are using their skills as a starting point to build companies of their own. At the same time, experienced workers are retiring faster than new workers are entering the trades, creating even more demand for people with the right training and skills.

It’s an interesting conversation about the stigma that still surrounds the trades — and the career opportunities that can get overlooked because of it.

Worth a listen.

Congresswoman Rep. Becca Balint stopped by the Vermont Construction Academy for a tour and a firsthand look at the program! 🔨

Staff and VCA board members walked her through the facility, followed by a hands-on demo — the Congresswoman even cut wood on a miter saw and branded it with the VCA logo to take back to her office.

She also met with several of our apprentices and pre-apprentices, who shared their own stories and paths into the trades.

We're grateful for the engagement and support from our leaders — and glad to see Congresswoman Balint's enthusiasm for growing participation in the trades! 👷‍♀️👷

Yesterday we spent time at Boys & Girls Club of Burlington, using tools to build Wood Duck nesting boxes with students.

They were excited to get hands-on and talk about pathways into the construction industry. Putting tools in young people’s hands and introducing them to career opportunities early is crucial to building the future of our industry!

This week we welcomed about 30 students to Vermont Construction Academy for a hands-on afternoon in the trades! 🛠️

These students are part of a summer program with the U.S. Committee for Refugees and Immigrants (USCRI), exploring career and future pathways. They started in the classroom learning about what a career in the trades looks like and the financial future it can offer, then got hands-on with carpentry — using power tools including a Brad nailer, pounding nails, and even racing to see who could pound a nail the fastest and cut a board with a Sawzall the fastest!

Exposing young people to the trades early opens doors — you never know which student walks away today having found their future career.
