July is Disability Pride Month. ♿🌈

Disability Pride Month celebrates the diversity, strength, and contributions of people with disabilities while recognizing disability as a natural part of the human experience.

Observed each July, the month commemorates the signing of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) on July 26, 1990—a landmark civil rights law that expanded access and protections for millions of Americans.

The Disability Pride Flag represents the many experiences within the disability community:
❤️ Physical disabilities
💛 Neurodivergence
🤍 Invisible and undiagnosed disabilities
💚 Sensory disabilities
💙 Psychiatric and emotional disabilities

Disability Pride isn’t about celebrating pain or the challenges that disability can bring. It’s about celebrating dignity, identity, resilience, and the right for everyone to participate fully in their communities.

Creating an inclusive community means thinking beyond ramps and elevators. It means considering accessibility in our events, workplaces, schools, communication, and everyday interactions so that everyone has the opportunity to belong and thrive.

This July, let’s celebrate the voices, talents, and experiences of our disabled neighbors and continue working together to make Windham a community where everyone is welcome.

💙 Happy Disability Pride Month!

Beach Access, Made Better ♿🏖️

To kick off Disability Pride Month, Windham’s town beach now has a Mobi-mat — a rollout pathway that makes the sand accessible for wheelchairs, walkers, and strollers alike. The mat was generously donated by Thomas J. Case and installed by the town.

Small changes like this make a big difference, and we’re proud to see moments like this that make our community more welcoming to everyone.

Here’s to normalizing accessibility as just… how we do things.
