GCPSA - Gulf Coast Post-Doc and Student Association

Our association started in 2017 by the students and post-docs at GCREC-UF. In 2018 it was officially named as GCPSA.

We have the objective to enhance the communication and networking between graduate students, post-docs, and faculty in Ag related fields.

𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗱𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝗮 𝗵𝗼𝗻𝗲𝘆𝗯𝗲𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗻𝘆 𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝘀𝘂𝗰𝗵 𝗲𝘅𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗼𝗿𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝗰𝗼𝗼𝗿𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻? 🐝

This week, GCPSA welcomed PhD student Jack T. Koster for an engaging seminar titled, “Buzzing Systems: Unraveling the Inner Workings of Honeybees.”

Attendees explored how honeybee colonies function as a superorganism — with thousands of individual bees working together through chemical communication, nutrition, and developmental cues.

From pheromone-driven behaviors inside the hive to the processes that determine whether a bee becomes a worker or queen, the seminar highlighted how remarkably complex biological systems can emerge from simple interactions.

These insights are especially important because honeybees play a critical role in agricultural productivity and ecosystem health.

We had an insightful seminar on “Field-Ready AI for Florida Agriculture: A Short Journey Through Applications Ranging from Robotic Mapping to AI Agents” on April 22. It was exciting to see how AI is actively transforming the agricultural landscape from precision mapping to intelligent decision-making systems in the field.

Last week, GCPSA organized and celebrated Graduate Student Appreciation Week and it was exactly what we needed. 🎉
From Monday's energy filled meetings and conversations to Thursday's grounding meditation session, every moment hit different.

We were pleased to welcome Peter McDonald, CEO of Ecospray, for a recent GCPSA professional development workshop.

With experience across organizations including Agrovista UK, AF Group, and Syngenta, Peter shared insights on building a career in agriculture—from technical roles to executive leadership.

At Ecospray, he leads the development and commercialization of biologically derived crop protection solutions, including a garlic-based bio-nematicide. The company has established operations across Europe, Africa, and parts of Asia, and is now expanding into the U.S. market.

His visit provided students with valuable perspective on agricultural innovation and the process of bringing new technologies to growers.
