Boiling water on a charcoal grill might sound weird. But to learn boiling water on it is an important skill to know. Especially when conventional cooking methods are not available. Irrespective of whether you’re camping, the lights go off. It is a skill everyone should learn.

Prepare the Grill
Make sure to clean your grill before using it. A clean grill keeps your water away from getting any extra unwanted flavor during boiling. Take the time to inspect the grill grate and its contents, removing any buildup or debris that could affect the temperature. By starting with a clean grill, you put water to boil more efficiently and have an enjoyable cooking experience.

Set Up the Charcoal
Arrange the charcoal bricks in a single row on one side of the grill. This system creates direct heat, which allows for efficient steam production. Placing the charcoal on one side of the grill allows you to control the intensity of the heat.

Ignite the Charcoal
Once the charcoal is sorted, it is time to ignite it. Use any method such as a charcoal filter, electric starter, chimney starter for burning the charcoal until ash forms.

Moisture is the biggest reason that causes rust on grills. When the grill is exposed to moisture, in the form of humidity, rain, or even condensation, it causes rust formation. The rust layer is buildup usually on unprotected metal surfaces.
A grill’s rusting process can also be triggered by acidic and citrus foods. An oxidation reaction occurs when citric and acidic foods come into contact with the metal surface of your grill. This causes rust to form, which reduces the grill’s lifespan.
When the food is cooked over high heat it can also contribute in rust formation. The high temperature or extreme heat can damage the protective coatings on grills and the material is degraded, causing rusting. Most of the charcoal grill gets rust as the temperature reaches up to 1200 °F.
When you don’t clean and maintain your grill, it results in debris, grease, and food particles accumulating on the grill which then traps the moisture and makes favorable conditions for dangerous mold formation which at the end causes the grill to rust.

The garage is an alternate area for storage. Most of them have oil (either brake or engine oil) that sometimes also spills on the floor, gas for lawnmowers, papers, and many other flammable things. If we use a grill, especially gas and charcoal ones, it can pose a significant risk. This is because most grills reach temperatures well above 500℉ or more.

Therefore, even if you are one of the finest and safest grillers, there is a high chance that a spark or an ember can escape from your grill, which will be enough to ignite the whole area, including your home, even if the garage door is open, which won’t help.

Many of us think it is okay to grill in the garage with the door open. But the reality is toxic gases, oil, and open fire make high risk of fire in close area.

The Vinegar-Baking Soda Method
Make a mixture of vinegar and baking soda in equal amount to prepare a thick paste. Then spread this paste on the grill grates rusty area and leave it for several hours. The acidity of the vinegar destroys the rust. The rigidness of baking soda helps to scrub the rest of the rust from the grill Grates.

When the paste has done its job, get a wire brush or a steel wool to scrub off the remaining rust from the grates. Drain and also rinse them thoroughly using water then ensure they are completely dry the next time you use the grill.

The Salt Vinegar Soaking Method
The salt vinegar soaking method requires a container enough to soak the grill grates with equal parts of salt and vinegar.

Add salt in a generous proportion while stirring until it is completely dissolved. Submerge the rusty grill grates in the solution for about 3-4 hours or overnight. The vinegar interacting by its acidic properties with salt acting as abrasive solution help loosen and dissolve the rust from the grills.

Next take off the grates and wash them with a wire brush or steel wool so you can eliminate the remaining rust. Thoroughly rinse the grates with water and dry them out completely before placing them back onto the grill.

Take a kitchen towel and fold it in two to three folds according to the size of the towel. Damp the towel, place it on the grilling plate, and close the grill. It will loosen the food particles and catch the grease from the plates. It is advised not to put the damp towel in the grill right after grilling as it will produce lots of steam in the surrounding areas.

You can use a spray bottle to clean the grill. Spray the grates still it is hot. Hold a side of the towel using metal tongs and wipe down the grates, especially the grooves or ridges. Avoid pouring water directly onto your grill, as this can damage the electrical components of the grill.

Use Plastic scraper
A plastic scraper comes with a Foreman grill because it has a coating of non-stick substance or the parts are made up of ceramics. Gently and patiently use the scrubber on the grates to remove any remaining fats and food chunks that are left after using a damp towel. The grilling plates have grooves which makes it difficult to clean without the scrubber. Do not use hard scrubbers because they can damage the non-stick surface of the grilling plate.

Wash the grill
Washing the grill does not mean to submerge the entire grill in a shank full of water. The best practice is to take a soft sponge wet it with water and apply a small amount of soap to it. Wipe the grates thoroughly to remove any remaining food particles and grease. When they are free from residue slightly wash the grates with water or use a clean wet sponge that will work the same.

Clean the drip pan
Remove the drip pan from the grill carefully. Dump the food particles and grease along with the soapy water that is collected when cleaning the grates. It is situated below the grooves of the grates to collect the grease and food particles. If it is not used the grease will flow on the bottom of the grill and ultimately cause a grease fire. The other disadvantage of not using a drip pan is grill will smell bad when the stuck grease on the corners gets heated up.

Wash it thoroughly in a sink by applying soap and scrub it if the grease gets stuck. These are dishwasher safe so you can go for that as well.

The technology behind smokeless grills goes beyond just temperature controls and sensors. The infrared burner technology of smokeless grills plays the main role in making the grilling process smokeless.

It distributes the heat evenly throughout the grill and heats up the grill quickly. It is considered one of the unique features of a smokeless grill. The intense heat produced by the infrared burners quickly sears the food. The fats and other juices within the food do not reach the burners which minimizes the smoke production in the grill.

How Do Smokeless Grills Work?
The working of smokeless grills depends on its components. These components are specifically designed to reduce the amount of smoke produced during cooking. The cooking grates have grooves within them. The drip pan is placed right below the grooves to collect the fresh grease and food particles while grilling. The smoke fan or hood collects the smoke. The glass lid is there to restrict the spreading of the smoke in the atmosphere.

1. Clean the Mess
The first step is to clean the grill. The charcoal grill has lots of mess in the fire pot. You can access the grill even after removing the ashes and the leftover charcoal. It also contains lots of grease and food particles. Wear protective gloves before removing the grates and the mess from the grill. Remove the solid particles and after that use a shop vacuum for cleaning the ashes and the leftover particles.

2. Access the Damage
After cleaning the mess, determine the extent of the damage. If the grime is stuck to the bottom use a scrapper and scrap the bottom. Sometimes the grime and the greasy make the grill nasty so you need to wash it thoroughly for better inspection. Check the grill thoroughly to understand the size of the hole and the location where you need fixation. If there is a crack and the surrounding areas are in good condition then it can easily be repaired but if the hole is big then you have to fix it through different techniques.

3. Gather tools and materials

Sandpaper
Heat resistant epoxy

The design of a smokeless grill greatly reduces the amount of smoke produced during cooking. The components are made in such a way that it helps in reducing the smoke. The electric fans or smoke extractors, infrared burners, and grilling plates collectively make the grill smokeless. The grooves present in the grates deliver the grease and drippings from food to the drip pan avoiding direct contact with the heating source.
