Transportation plays an important role in helping students experiencing homelessness stay connected to their education. Students have the right to transportation to and from school, even when they move across school division lines, helping them maintain consistency during times of change.

Bus drivers and transportation staff are often among the first to notice when a student may be facing housing instability. By recognizing possible signs, responding with care, and connecting with McKinney-Vento liaisons, transportation teams can help ensure students and families receive the support they need.

Supporting students experiencing homelessness takes a community effort.

Through the partnership between Chesterfield County Public Schools and St. Mark's UMC Midlothian, VA, students and families have received assistance with housing, transportation, school supplies, and other essential needs that help them remain connected to school.

What began as a shared commitment has grown into a network of support that continues to make a meaningful impact for families facing housing instability. By working together, schools can identify students in need, community partners can provide timely resources, and families can find greater stability during difficult times.

Thank you to everyone involved for helping turn compassion into action and creating brighter opportunities for students and their families.

Homelessness and housing instability don’t always look the same for every family. Living situations considered homeless under the McKinney-Vento Act include:
- Shelter or transitional housing
- Motel, hotel, or campground due to lack of other options
- Car, park, or other places not designated for sleeping
- Staying with family or friends due to loss of housing, economic hardship, or a similar reason

If you are living in one of these situations, your child has the right to stay in their school of origin when it’s in their best interest, or enroll immediately in a new school without delays, even if required documents are not available.
