Great real-world training in action at SHS CTE! 🤝
Mrs. Teresa Mays, Student Services Coordinator, recently conducted mock interviews with our Educator Preparation students. During a dedicated reflection time, Mrs. Mays mentored students on the subtle yet essential elements of interview success: mastering a confident handshake, maintaining strong eye contact, understanding word connotations, and demonstrating high-level professionalism.

From High School to College: More Independence, More Responsibility

Rhonda Paslay, PRCC Math Lab Coordinator, helped our Educator Preparation students understand an important difference between high school and college. A high school course provides approximately 135 hours of classroom instruction, while a typical community college course may provide only about 37.5 hours. That difference means college students must take greater responsibility for studying, completing assignments, managing their time, and seeking help when needed.

Mrs. Paslay also shared her own journey through education, including earning a bachelor’s degree in mathematics, entering teaching through an alternate-route program, teaching at Stone High School and Harrison Central High School, earning a special education endorsement, and working in elementary and community college settings. Her career demonstrates that the path of an educator can grow and change through continued learning.

Thank you, Mrs. Paslay, for giving our future educators an honest look at college expectations and reminding them that success depends on preparation, responsibility, and work ethic.

PROXIMITY: A QUIET WAY TO REDIRECT

Future educators practiced proximity, a preventive classroom-management strategy in which the teacher intentionally moves closer to a student or learning area. Used appropriately, proximity can redirect minor off-task behavior, support attention, and preserve the flow of instruction without publicly correcting the student.

Building a Professional Portfolio: Meet the Teacher Flyer

Educator Preparation students created Meet the Teacher flyers as part of their developing professional portfolios. This assignment gave students practice introducing themselves to future students and families while strengthening professional communication, digital design, and self-reflection. Each flyer represents another step toward seeing themselves as future educators.
