Press Release: Willie Davis has been selected as Wichita High School East Girls Head Basketball Coach

Willie Davis has been selected as Wichita High School East Head Girls’ Basketball Coach for the 2024-2025 school year.

Coach Davis has worked for WPS for the past 21 years and currently works in the Safety Services Department. He has a passion for coaching, mentoring, and working with student athletes throughout USD259.

Originally from Chicago, Coach Davis played basketball at Wichita State University from 1998 to 2001. After college he began coaching and has coached the past 20 years at various schools. He coached at Derby High School for 6 years. After coaching at Derby, he came to East and coached Freshman and JV Boys Basketball for 6 years. While coaching Boys Basketball at East, Coach Davis was part of the coaching staff who won the KSHSAA 6A Boys Basketball State Championship in 2015. He is also involved in the community and has helped coach the Kansas United 2029 Girls Basketball Team, where he led them to a 2nd Place finish at the AAU National two years ago. His team has also won the MAYB National Championship the past four years in a row. This previous season, Coach Davis was a Girls Assistant Basketball Coach.

Wichita High School East is excited to have Coach Davis as our Head Girls Basketball Coach. He brings a wealth of knowledge, a winning mindset, and a passion for working with student athletes, to the rich traditions of Wichita’s Original High School, the Home of Champions.

Seniors, return your laptop, charger, and MiFi (if applicable) in the Commons (C207) during 7th hour on Monday, May 13. Students with pass cards may turn in their device AFTER their last class. You must turn in everything and pay any obligations to receive your graduation tickets. If you are taking an AP or IB exam on or after the 13th, you may still get your tickets, but your diploma will be held until the device is returned and your obligations paid.

Seniors! Don't forget Senior Breakfast on Wednesday, May 15th, at 8:00 am on the front lawn. Dress nicely and wear white! It will also be your last chance to buy a yearbook!

After consulting with multiple weather experts and considering the safety of our students and guests, we have made the decision to move the prom to East High’s FEMA Gym. While we were hopeful to proceed with the original venue, this change ensures that everyone can enjoy the event comfortably and without concern.

We understand the significance of prom and the excitement surrounding it, and we are committed to making this a memorable and safe experience for all attendees. Please note that all other details regarding the prom remain the same, including the date and time. Students will enter the Prom through Door #5, our Main Gym Entrance. We will also continue to adhere to any necessary safety protocols to ensure a smooth and enjoyable event for everyone.

Thank you for your understanding, flexibility, and cooperation as we navigate these adjustments.

Press Release: Kenny Taylor has been selected as Wichita High School East Head Wrestling Coach

Kenny Taylor has been selected as Wichita High School East Head Wrestling Coach for the 2024-2025 school year.

Coach Taylor is a Proud Graduate of Wichita Public Schools. He has worked for WPS for the past 10 years and currently works in the Safety Services Department.
He has a passion for coaching, mentoring, and working with student athletes. He has helped coach and mentor wrestlers with Team Hard Knox Wrestling Club for several years.

Coach Taylor has over 25 years of wrestling experience. As a wrestler at West High School, Coach Taylor won 2 State individual titles in 1995 and 1996. Later, as an Assistant Coach at West, he was a part of the coaching staff that won a state title in 2000.

Wichita High School East is excited to welcome Coach Taylor as our Head Wrestling Coach. He brings a wealth of knowledge, a winning mindset, and a passion for working with student athletes, to the rich traditions of Wichita’s Original High School, the Home of Champions.

Summer School enrollment begins on April 8! Classes will be offered for recovery as well as original credit. This summer classes will be held at South High for current 8th-10th graders, West High for current 11th-12th graders, and online via Education Imagine Academy. Original credit classes cost $90 per course for USD 259 students, $150 for non-district students, and recovery credits continue to be offered at no cost. Wichita State welcomes Ava Wilkie, a senior from Wichita High School East, to campus as the 2024 Lenora N. McGregor Scholar. She will receive up to $26,000 over four years at WSU, where she plans to study secondary history education. Congratulations, Ava! wsu.news/McGregor2024
