Supporting your Child through a Personal-Electronic-Device-Free School Day

With the passage of Kansas House Bill 2299, schools across Kansas, including Wichita East High School, are required to implement new expectations regarding student personal electronic device use during the school day. As a public school, we are committed to meeting these state expectations with consistency, care, and a student-centered approach. We know this will be a learning process for all of us, and as we move forward together, we will continue to learn, adjust, and refine our practices along the way.

Personal Electronic Devices include, but are not limited to:

☑️Smart glasses

How parents can support this transition:
🔵Talk positively about the policy & explain the reasons behind it
🔵Create device-free times at home (meals, bedtime, family time, etc.)
🔵Help your child plan ahead for after-school transportation & activities
🔵Avoid texting or calling your child during the school day & remind your child to use the school office for important communication

Helping your child adjust:
👍Remind them it may feel difficult at first, but it will get easier
👍Encourage them to connect with friends face-to-face
👍Celebrate small successes in staying focused & present in classroom instruction
👍Reinforce the long-term benefits for academic success & well-being

In compliance with Kansas House Bill 2299 (HB2299), East High School will implement a Personal Electronic Device (PED) Free Zone during the school day, beginning with the start of the 2026-2027 school year. This expectation applies to all instructional time, as well as passing periods and lunch. We understand that this will be an adjustment for our students and families, and we appreciate your support and patience as we implement this change. The purpose of this policy is to comply with HB2299 and to provide a distraction-free learning environment that supports student focus, engagement, and academic success.

Personal Electronic Devices include, but are not limited to:

PED Policy
📄ALL Personal Electronic Devices are not to be brought in the building.
📄If you violate this policy, you will be escorted to the Commons to turn in your PED.
📄If you need to communicate with your child during the school day, please call the office.
📄Students who need to contact a parent or guardian may do so using a school phone.

Collection Policy:
🔵Students will place PEDs in designated collection location (Main Entrance, West, Stoop, Circle Drive).
🔵You will be given a number card to place on your lanyard.
🔵If you are leaving early, use your card to pick up your PED from the Security Office (C105) or Main Entrance.
🔵At the end of the school day, pick up your device using your number card at the same location you turned it in at.
🔵Buses will not wait so we encourage you to leave devices at home.

Congratulations to our East High Blue Aces who participated this year in the National Scrollathon at Ulrich Museum of Art at Wichita State University and the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC!

Steven and William Ladd launched the National Scrollathon in Kansas at the Ulrich Museum of Art at Wichita State University, marking Kansas's contribution to America's Cultural Project and the national goal of Uniting America. This expansive, nationwide collaboration will culminate in 2026 at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, commemorating the 250th anniversary of the United States-the Semiquincentennial.

On October 2, 2025, 116 participants from across Kansas engaged in sessions where they created individual artworks expressing their personal stories, contributed to a Collaborative Masterwork-a legacy artwork representing Kansas for the Semiquincentennial-and had their photographic portraits created as part of the initiative. The program concluded with the unveiling of Interconnected, the Collaborative Masterwork, which was installed at the Ulrich Museum of Art alongside a Portrait Mural and a Signature Plate bearing the names of all participants.

Rooted in the belief that every human being has creative potential and that there is power in coming together and working in community, Scrollathon was founded by artist-brothers Steven and William Ladd in 2006. Partnering with hundreds of stakeholders and institutions, Scrollathon has since engaged more than 10,000 participants nationwide.

The National Scrollathon extends this mission on a monumental scale, uniting people of diverse ages, backgrounds, and abilities across all 50 states, Washington, D.C., and five U.S. territories. This unprecedented initiative will culminate in 2026 with a historic national commemoration of art, community, and collaboration for America's 250th birthday.
