For DJ Fisher, “Just A Kid From Wichita” is bigger than a basketball camp or a slogan — it’s a statement about identity, humility, resilience, and giving back to the city that shaped him.
The phrase reflects the idea that no matter how far someone goes in sports, business, or life, they never forget where they came from. Fisher has consistently tied the movement back to Wichita’s culture, its basketball history, and the people who poured into him as a kid.
Growing up in Wichita, Fisher has spoken openly about losing friends to gang violence, su***de, and substance abuse. He created the program as what he called a “positive distraction” for youth; a way to expose kids to opportunity, mentorship, and hope through sports.
The hometown itself represents:
Community mentors who opened doors for him, especially through the historic M.E.F.S.E.C. recreation center, now the Lynette Woodard Recreation Center.
A city with deep basketball roots and overlooked talent.
Pride in being from Wichita even while working at high levels in the sports industry.
A responsibility to return home and create opportunities for the next generation.
It’s amazing to see another generation of kids that we’ve inspired through BOOKSGIVING are now going to High School! Pleasant Valley Middle School - USD 259 🫶🏾🫵🏾
