Home of the Emory Lindquist Honors Scholar program. Not more work, more meaningful work.

The Cohen Honors College aims to support all highly motivated students at Wichita State University by offering challenging interdisciplinary and department courses for Honors students and offering funding for undergraduate research and general education credit for service learning to all WSU students. Cohen Honors College students gain the habits of creative thinking, problem solving and lifelong learning through coursework, participation in community service and college governance. They benefit from closer contact with faculty (the average student-to-faculty ratio in Honors courses is 8:1), access to scholarships for experience-based learning such as study abroad, and opportunities for individual and collaborative original research to prepare for graduate, professional school, or the demands of today’s global workforce.

First-year Cohen Honors students, their guests, and faculty are invited to Honors Induction TOMORROW on Saturday, October 3 at 1pm in Weidemann Hall. This program occurs during Wichita State University’s Family Weekend. This cherished tradition formally welcomes students into our academic community and includes an annual book dedication by the dean of the college to the incoming class. Following the event, all are welcome to the Cohen Honors College Open House.

Elyzabeth Nuñez is a Cohen Honors ambassador who participated in WSU’s First-Year Research Experience (FYRE) program.
“FYRE gave me the opportunity to get involved in research that I genuinely care about. I worked with Dr. Yuanyuan Gao on using electromyography (EMG) to study hand movements in stroke patients and their rehabilitation. My favorite part was seeing how the research I was doing could connect to real patient outcomes and make a difference in someone’s independence. FYRE not only gave me hands-on research experience but also helped me discover a passion for biomedical research and shape the direction I want to take in my career. It was an experience that truly changed my perspective on what I could do as a student.”

WSU’s First Year Research Experience (FYRE) program is open to ALL first-year students at Wichita State University. Students need not be members of the Honors College but should have a strong interest in STEM fields. The FYRE in STEM program is open to all majors. The deadline is Friday, October 16.

The UReCA Hub hosted a lunch-and-learn on Wednesday, September 9. This event brought faculty and students together to explore the value, methods and impact of research in the humanities. Recipients of the Honors Humanities Scholar award were recognized.

Panelists for this session were Dr. Rocío Del Águila, chair and associate professor of Spanish, Dr. Jean Griffith, associate professor of English, and Dr. Mythili Menon, associate professor and director of linguistics.
