Celebrating Easter in Switzerland: Across Switzerland, Easter is shaped by a variety of regional traditions that bring together history, craftsmanship, and a sense of community.

A central symbol of the holiday is the Osterei (Easter egg). Eggs are carefully dyed, painted, or even intricately carved, representing renewal and new life. In many households and villages, these eggs are not only decorative but also part of games and customs passed down through generations.

One of the most well-known traditions is Eiertütschen, an egg-tapping contest where two people knock their hard-boiled eggs against each other; the one whose egg remains uncracked wins. Simple but competitive, it’s a favorite across the country.

In the canton of Zurich, the playful custom of Zwänzgerle adds a twist: children present their Easter eggs while adults attempt to toss a 20-cent coin onto them. If the coin sticks, the adult keeps the egg; if it falls, the child gets to keep the coin, making it a game of luck and laughter.

In some regions, Easter is also marked by markets and processions, while bakeries prepare seasonal specialties such as Zopf (braided bread) and lamb-shaped cakes, tying culinary traditions to the celebration.

Whether through games, food, or shared moments, Easter in Switzerland reflects a rich mix of local customs that continue to bring people together each spring.🌷
