This summer, a group of DHS students traveled to Atlanta, Georgia, to compete in the National Personal Finance Challenge after they won the state competition. Student participants include Emma Stuhlsatz, Elijah Brackeen, Boston Goddard and Binh Le.
The National Personal Finance Challenge (NPFC) is a nationwide competition that offers high school students the opportunity to build and demonstrate their knowledge in the concepts of earning income, spending, saving, investing, managing credit and managing risk, sponsored by the Council of Economic Education. While in Atlanta, they also visited and learned about the Federal Reserve on their day off.
A huge thank you goes to Laura McLaughlin for being their chaperone. These students represented Derby well!

➡️ Reminder: Join us for our annual Back to School Night at Derby High School from 4:30-7PM (come-and-go event) on Tuesday, August 4. This is an opportunity for students to meet their teachers, walk their schedules, and learn more about DHS. Principal Gretchen Pontious will host a welcome session at 5:30 pm in the auditorium to share about academics, career pathways, student support programs, and extracurricular opportunities.
➡️ The 2025-2026 yearbook will also be available to pick up during this time! Head to the gym lobby, where Yearbook staff members will be handing out yearbooks to those who purchased them.
If you were put on the waiting list, you can call (316) 788-8500 ahead of time to pay for the yearbook. Or you can pay in person -- by check or exact cash. If you can't make it to the gym lobby on August 4, you may pick up your yearbook in the finance office during school hours. Any questions on yearbooks? Contact Joanna Chadwick at [email protected].

At Marching Band Camp this week, students practiced marching fundamentals, music and choreography to prepare for Friday night performances and this season’s competitive show. Students and Band staff had some fun adding spirit days to the mix, such as Minion Monday and Friendly Friday, where they dressed up to match their sections. We can’t wait to see their hard work in action during marching season.

This week, Derby High School’s AFJROTC held a Drill Camp to give freshmen and first-year cadets a head start on marching and a chance to meet upperclassmen leadership. They learned marching formations and drill movements and practiced them each day. Cadets celebrated the end of camp with an ice cream social and had an opportunity to show their families what they had learned. Great job, Panthers, on a successful summer camp!
