No school for any 9 a.m. start WPS elementary schools today, Wednesday, Sept. 16, due to the boil water advisory. Students at latchkey at these schools will need to be picked up as soon as possible.

Determinations about Sept. 17 and after-school events will be made when more information is available.

Schools that are already in session and 9 a.m. secondary start schools will continue as normal.

The City of Wichita is issuing a boil water advisory for its water customers. On Wednesday, September 16, power was lost at the main water treatment plant and Hess pump station. Staff are investigating the cause. City Staff will hold a media briefing at 8:30 a.m. at City Hall, 455 N. Main in the first floor board room.

Wichita water customers should observe the following precautions until further notice:

Boil water for one minute prior to drinking or food preparation or use bottled water.

Dispose of ice cubes and do not use ice from a household automatic icemaker.
‎
Disinfect dishes and other food contact surfaces by immersion for at least one minute in clean tap water that contains one teaspoon of unscented household bleach per gallon of water.
‎
Water used for bathing does not generally need to be boiled. Supervision of children is necessary while bathing so that water is not ingested. Persons with cuts or severe rashes may wish to consult their physicians.

Regardless of whether the public water supplier or Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) announced a boil water advisory, only KDHE can issue the rescind order following testing at a certified laboratory. The City will provide regular updates on the boil advisory but cannot provide a time when the advisory will be rescinded at this time.

***Update: All after-school programs, activities and athletic practices on WPS property are canceled for today, Wednesday, Sept 16. Athletic events that are hosted out-of-district will be determined on a case-by-case basis.

Another homegrown delight!

Some teachers receive flowers. As do I 🥰 When I do, I like to put them out to watch my littles gather to discuss which one of our pollinating friends might like to feed best on which flower. They like to talk about their favorite vegetables and fruits those pollinating friends will visit next. Mostly, my littles like to bring things that their pollinating friends grew best. Sometimes, they even grow it themselves to share with everyone else. A shoutout to a wonderful family who grew this lovely cantaloupe to grace our table with.

Our blueberries were too sour to eat. Sooo, we made a delicious blueberry basil fruit spread. This was a perfect topping for our pumpkin waffles that were made and ready to eat. Yum-oh! We also read a family favorite, Blueberry Shoe. A perfect read to go with our perfect treat 💖

This morning has been a bit of a doozy managing emotions and expectations for these little ones.

It took enough of a toll on everyone that I declared today Pizza Friday.

With parental permission, of course.

While we waited for our pizza to come, the kiddos were at the table dealing out magnetic tiles like poker chips to build the tallest structure at the table.

When our order arrived, I plated and served their pizza slice with a cheese stick, cut celery, applesauce, and a side of Cheerios.

Yes, I said, Cheerios. They were requested and meet the meal requirements for a whole grain.

So, it's fine.

Guess what they cheered for when I placed this gourmet meal in front of them?

The celery. ❤️

And, they asked for seconds and thirds of celery.

I put a great deal of time and thought into what I feed these little ones. I work hard to nourish their bodies.

I also took a moment to pause before putting in said pizza order. I always want them to be best fed.

I thought about how some teachers receive flower, as do I. Those sweet eyes at the door all bright, clutching a posey that was procured or picked along the way.

Then I remembered... my littles often bring cucumbers, celery, carrots, berries, bananas, and apples to the door with the same sweet eyes.

I think we'll be fine.

I partner with the best of the best families to give these littles the best possible start in life.

And, sometimes life calls for a side of pizza to go with their celery.
