Told through a constellation of memories that spans four decades, Boys Without Fathers is the story of two brothers, Jason and Jess, who grew up working-poor on the edge of the Hamptons and learned from the example of their father, Pop, that men are supposed to be tough, they drink heavily, and they never talk about how theyβre feeling. We meet the brothers as young men in 2008, when Jason is driving Jess to a detox center in Portland, Oregon during a torrential rainstorm at first light.
Meanwhile, after at least a year of no contact and Jason already committed to his own sobriety, Pop calls to say heβs drinking again after twenty years. For decades, each brother struggled in their own ways to survive, but thanks to their steadfast mother and the bond all three shared, there had never been any shortage of hope, and against the odds, one of them ended up with both long-term sobriety and a PhD.

It was honor to serve as a storytelling guide at the Cancer Survivor Retreat! We explored joyful writing through the lens of the 3 Eβs (Experience, Embody, Envision). It was a reminder that JOY is a choice, not circumstantial. π€ Many thanks to the YMCA for inviting me & allowing me to do the work that I love.
