Monday night self defense class at Creating problems and working on how to solve them. This is what we’re doing here, making mistakes and learning from them.

BJJ is a combat sport. Fundamentally, being able to physically control another human being is the most general and basic aspect of all fighting. And there’s no more readily available method for most people to learn how to do this than training in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, since it’s the most accessible variation of grappling that most people have access to.

BJJ is also a specialized practice that comes with its own best practices and techniques that have developed according to the competitive nature of the sport and the relevant rule sets.

This poses a problem when you’re considering training in the context of self defense, especially when dealing with a weapon, and probably MOST especially when dealing with a knife. Some of the habits that make for a good BJJ practitioner can be a problem if you’re fighting over a knife. You can see some of them in this video.

The good news is that it’s very easy to take a good grappler and focus on hand-fighting, space management, bundling, and tie-ing to get to a good spot pretty quickly. It’s more familiarization than deep skill development.
