SAT., OCT. 17: RESCHEDULED WORK DAY AT MT. WOOD CEMETERY

Next Saturday from 10:00 to 3:00 we will be repairing small to mid-sized monuments in Section B, the area to the right of the cemetery's entrance.

This is our final volunteer work day of the season, rescheduled from Sunday, October 11 due to the weather.

We're aiming to create a more positive first impression for visitors to this historic cemetery. Restorations of large monuments last year have had high impact on the cemetery's overall appearance and condition.

We'll also be placing flags on veterans' graves in advance of Veterans Day next month.

Come and go as your schedule permits. Please wear weather appropriate clothing and sun protection, protective shoes and bring garden gloves. If you're a first timer, we'll train you on the spot! Drinking water and pizza will be provided.

The cemetery's road is narrow and not in great shape. We suggest parking at the Mt. Wood Overlook and crossing Mt. Wood Road with caution to the site.

We're making a difference one stone at a time! The cemeteries that are our present focus - Mt. Wood, Peninsula and Stone Church - are an important part of our heritage and need to be preserved.

Heads up, folks! The weather forecast for Sunday, October 11 has deteriorated and the probability of rain is 100%, mostly before noon, but with intermittent rain for the remainder of the day.

So, we're canceling the Mt. Wood Cemetery work day and aiming for next weekend.

CALL FOR VOLUNTEERS

On Sunday, October 11, from 10:00 to 3:00 we will be restoring midsized to small monuments in section B, just to the right of the cemetery entrance.

Our goal is to create a noticeable improvement to a first impression, an introduction to last summer’s major restorations in section H, further up the main road on the left. It’s an “oh wow!” moment waiting to happen, and with your help it will!

We’ll also be placing American stick flags on veterans’ graves, supplied through the generosity of donors Diana Mey, Chuck Ryan and the American Legion Post 1 Ladies Auxiliary.

Come and go as your schedule permits. Please wear a hat and sunscreen, protective footwear and bring garden gloves. We need your help at all skill levels, and we can train you on the spot!

Drinking water and pizza will be provided. The weather forecast is favorable: partly cloudy, high of 72 degrees, no rain.

Mt. Wood Cemetery is listed on the National Park Service registry of Historic Places. Incorporated in 1848, it is one of the oldest extant cemeteries in Wheeling and holds the remains of some of early Wheeling’s most notable citizens. Among them are Capt. John McClure, a well-known steamboat pilot who built the McClure Hotel; Noah Linsly whose bequest founded Linsly School in 1814, the oldest independent school west of the Alleghenies; and Dr. Simon Hullihen, the Father of Dental Surgery.

This workday is the last of this season, so don’t miss this opportunity to play a role in preserving one of Wheeling’s most historic final resting places. Come join our team!

SATURDAY, SEPT. 12: Call for Volunteers

Next Saturday from 10:00 to 3:00 is our work day at Stone Church Cemetery, resetting mid-to -smaller size monuments.

Please join us in making more progress in restoring one of our community's most historic cemeteries.

Founded in 1795, Stone Church Cemetery was gifted to the Forks of Wheeling Presbyterian Church by Col. David Shepherd, commander of Fort Henry during the first siege in 1777, and father of Moses Shepherd. The cemetery is the final resting place of 15 Revolutionary War patriots, and other notables including Archibald Woods, founder of Woodsfield, OH, whose farm is now Wheeling's Woodsdale neighborhood.

Come and go as your schedule permits. Please wear a hat and sunscreen, protective footwear and bring garden gloves. We need your help at all skill levels, and we can train you on the spot!

Our first volunteer workday will be Saturday, July 11 from 9:00 to 3:00, at historic Stone Church Cemetery in Elm Grove.
We will focus on resetting small to midsize monuments.
