Ohio County Cemeteries Foundation

Ohio County Cemeteries Foundation Mt. Wood Cemetery is Wheeling, West Virginia's, oldest extant cemetery. The goal of this movement is to return the cemetery to its former glory.

The Ohio County Cemeteries Foundation is a 501 c 3 non-profit organization that was established in June 2023 to raise funds for the restoration and preservation of cemeteries that lack an active association and board of directors. Incorporated in 1848, it is resting place for many of the area's prominent and hardworking citizens. This past year saw a grassroots movement of several local organizati

ons and volunteers from the community come together to partner on various projects. Long the victim of vandalism and the effects of gravity, the gravestones and monuments in this graveyard are fallen over, leaning, or in desperate need of a simple cleaning. Friends of Wheeling, Wheeling National Heritage Area, the Public Policy Foundation of West Virginia, and the Irene Meagel Fund at the Community Foundation for Ohio Valley, contracted a conservator to come to Mt. Wood and conduct a 3-day workshop on how to reset and repair many of the burial markers. Friends of Wheeling held a cemetery tour, bringing to life many of those that are found buried there. And, volunteers from the community, the Ohio Valley Young Preservationists and Belmont College students from the Building Preservation and Restoration program have spent countless hours working there this past Fall, to repair many of the gravestones. The cemetery was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in the Fall of 2013.

Peninsula Cemetery Work Day, Sun., Aug. 2

On Sunday, August 2, from 10:00 to 3:00 we'll be resetting monuments of various sizes, depending on the number of volunteers we have that day.

Volunteers may come and go as schedules permit. Drinking water will be provided. Please wear sunscreen, a hat, protective shoes and garden gloves.

We need your help and if you're a first timer, we'll train you.

Favorable weather and dedicated, skilled volunteers gave us a great day at Stone Church Cemetery on Saturday, July 11.

Thanks to Laura Dawson, Jean Finstein, Jay Frey, John Hargleroad, Penny McConnell, Peggy Niebergall, Mike Pajak, Steve Suhler and Elaine Strauch, and new volunteers Ray Carney and Travis Pritt for a productive day resetting and cleaning monuments.

We repaired five monuments of the McCausland family including memorials for three children, Eugene (born and died 1904), Lucy (1889 – 1902) and Harrison (1888 – 1892), their mother, Julia and World War II veteran Harry McCausland who served in the Air Corps.

Two monuments lying on the ground were reset and are now upright. They mark the graves of Henry Kruzer, born in Saxony July 7, 1814, and died in Wheeling July 30, 1882, and Isaac Burkham, who died in Wheeling on February 21, 1868. Of note, Isaac and Nancy Kiggins Burkham’s son John Elzie Burkham married Margaret Feay whose family built the historic Feay Inn. The Feay property was developed into today’s Burkham Court in Elm Grove.

More than 10 in-ground grave markers were edged to reveal their inscriptions.

We will focus on resetting small to midsize monuments.

Volunteers may come and go as your schedule permits. Please wear a hat, sunscreen and protective shoes, and bring your garden gloves. Drinking water will be provided.

What: Spring cleanup: clearing brush and overgrowth, fallen tree limbs and trash.
