I worked on everything from homes to schools, banks, churches, prisons and commercial projects. I earned my certificate as a journeyman mason in Maryland in the earlly 70's. Since then, I became increasingly interested in Historic masonry. I studied and learned to install genuine Rumford fireplaces, which took some negotiation with local building departments, since they didn't meet current code re

quirements. I also developed my own successful technique for repointing masonry based upon both study and experience. Every day as I travel I see historic masonry being ruined, by masons that simply don't understand the science behind historic masonry restoration. Tragically, an improper repair is worse than no repair at all, because it will accelerate deterioration. If you know someone that is about to attempt to resotore the masonry on an historic home, I'd be pleased to consult with them and help them avoid ruination.
