Good morning everyone!!! I hope that you have all had a great first day or that you are still enjoying your summer. Not spamming you here, just wanted to provide you with a great opportunity for your students. If your school has ever done National History Bee with National Geographic, they are now defunct with the acquisition by Disney. There is an alternate option. International Academic Competitions runs middle and elementary science, geography and history bees all over the country and they also have a National Championship and an Internationals as well. If you are interested in this, I can send you information and we can set up a meeting. Send me your email address to provide this amazing opportunity for your students. If you have watched the movie ”The Butler”, then you can appreciate the experience our national history club students are going to have this year. I just got off the phone with Mr. Charles Allen, pictures above in the far right, and he is going to give our students some behind the scenes information of his father Eugene Allen who served as a personal butler to each president from Truman to Reagan. This is insight into the life of Mr. Allen as portrayed by Forest Whitacker and written about by Wil Haygood will be a great addition to our quarterly lecture series engaging students with historic accounts from ripple that were there!! It’s going to be another great year to be a member of the National History Club in hundreds of schools across our great nation!!

Frankton Jr. / Sr. High School’s (IN) History Club decided to focus on local history through a cemetery tour. In three small groups, members were shuttled out to two of the town's old cemeteries. Along the way students were treated to stories of Frankton's settlement. At each cemetery a local history expert showed where the founders of the town, and other local notables, were buried, including a few veterans of the War of 1812 (in fact they learned that the soldier who killed Tecumseh may have been a local and is buried right outside town) and May Berry, who was the first woman to die overseas in an American war. Berry had traveled to Europe during WWI as a Red Cross nurse, where she contracted pneumonia and died. The students were also given the chance to do some crude headstone tracing. It was short and local, but students reported having a great time and learning a great deal about their hometown!

Their daunting mission: conduct sabotage and build a resistance. Spymistress Vera Atkins, later the inspiration for Ian Fleming’s Miss Moneypenny in the James Bond franchise, was the chief recruiter for this secret army. Atkins selected two unusual candidates: Virginia Hall, an American journalist from Baltimore hampered by a wooden leg, and Noor Inayat Khan, a wireless officer of Indian descent and an avowed pacifist. Together, they worked to undermine the N**i regime in France. The courage, sacrifices and grit of these three women helped quell the N**i occupation – and ultimately turned the tide of the war.
