🌈 Happy Pride Month from the West Liberty University H**petology & H**petoculture Lab! 🐢🐍🦎

Grad students Moriah and Beorn with undergrads Lorelei and Samuel attended the annual H**petology Weekend meeting in Slade, KY! Moriah was invited to present about the Appalachian Aquatic Conservation Center’s amazing turtle conservation projects being conducted by students at WLU. They were also able to connect with Kentucky Reptile Zoo’s founders Jim and Kristen, author of Amphibians and Reptiles of West Virginia - Dr. Thomas K. Pauley, and LOTS of cool h**ps that reside in the Red River Gorge! We are honored to send students out to places all over to represent our h**p lab and school! **p **petologyweekend

Our students in Iowa work with Ornate Box Turtles on a daily basis. We are thrilled to be able to contribute to field research and management to help conserve this amazing species!

Our field crew in Iowa spent afternoons in the past week catching turtles for data collection, and we sure did catch a lot of turtles! 🐢

Each turtle that is captured gets measured and notched with a unique pattern so that we can identify the turtle if we capture it again in the future. Notching turtles is a useful way to track growth and movement of individuals over time, and surveys like these help us gain a better understanding of the turtle community at our study site.

We’ve had a BUSY start to the field season this year! Here are just a few photos of some of the critters we’ve seen and worked with this year in Iowa.

We have lots of research ongoing in Iowa currently, with a crew of 9 students researching snakes, turtles, and frogs there. Additionally, we have h**p projects ongoing in West Virginia, and we have multiple students completing h**p related internships across the country (and internationally!) this summer. We’ll be sharing more about specific projects soon!

Building drift fences is hard work… but having fun with it makes it a little easier!

In all seriousness, our students put in a full day of dedicated work to get our drift fences constructed for this year’s field season. We have already started capturing and collecting data on snakes and turtles this year, and will be sharing some updates on that work soon! 🐍🐢

Huge congratulations to Tyler Schwisow for successfully defending his thesis on the diet and microbiome of two Heterodon species!

Tyler is the first graduate student to officially come through the WLU h**p lab, and he has set an amazing example for future students.

Tyler, we wish you the best in all of your future endeavors!

This past weekend, West Liberty University students attended the 100th annual meeting of West Virginia Academy of Sciences.

Many students give poster presentations and talks on their h**petology related research. H**p lab grad student, Alyssa Lutz, and crayfish lab grad student, Hannah Holbert, won awards for their presentations!

Congrats and great job everyone! We look forward to continuing research this upcoming field season!

Fantastic start to the field season! Our crew traveled to Iowa this weekend to install drift fences for the upcoming field season of snake and turtle research. We placed almost 5000 feet of fencing — that’s nearly a mile long! And of course we got to see some h**ps while we were there too!
