We had an amazing night for the last Lyrical Lounge of the school year! The poets exuded talent, enthusiasm, and care for each other, and it was fantastic to witness!

Welcome back to another Wednesday Wordplay Workout!

Today's prompt: Write a poem based on one of your most recently used emojis, but each word can only have one syllable!

Example:

"
🫠
Melt
With drips
Slow at first
Too hot to hold
I don't know how to feel
The drip is real
I blaze so much
The pace goes slow
Then fast
Like to miss
Like a heart
Like fire"

Let's work those pens,

Welcome back to another Wednesday Wordplay Workout!

Today's prompt: Find an old photo of yourself and write a poem to your former self.

Example:

"It's 2019

You're acne is raging

Like meteorite craters on your face

But your mouth is closed

As you hide those not so pearly whites

But you should smile more

You really should

Because that awkwardness is just a phase

There will be days when you question what life is

And there will be days you want to jump outside of yourself for joy

And for gratitude

You will learn that life is what you make it

That love comes and goes like a Greyhound bus

That seasons are meant to be cold

And warm

And everything in between

You will learn that this life

Is just a phase

And you can always choose to be a kid at heart

And still be the person you were always destined to be"

Let's work those pens,

-Christopher

Welcome back to another Wednesday Wordplay Workout!

Today's Prompt: Write a poem explaining why you write.

Example:

"I don't write because the pen has a way of calling me
Because it speaks in a language that only some can understand
In a language that I can understand
I don't write because the paper is the most listening ear
A place for me to lay down my burdens
With the scratching of graphite
And the sigh of ink
I don't write because words spoken carry
A different weight
Sound like symphonies
And ballads
I don't write because it's the only thing I'm good at
The only thing I'll never be good enough at
I write because I breathe in words
I think in poetry
And when the period ends my story
It will be evidence that I was alive"

Let's work those pens!

Our Louder Than a Bomb Florida High School spoken word poetry competition had a brilliant finale for our UPS Team Finals at Barry University! A huge congratulations to Miramar High School for taking home the 1st place trophy after facing off with the amazingly talented poets from A.W. Dreyfoos, Sheridan Tech, and Flanagan!

Jason Taylor himself even took to the stage to show up personally for these students and impart powerful words of encouragement after being touched by their performances!

Thank you to for hosting us, to the poets and educators for their admirable talent and dedication, and to our staff and audience members for an amazing capstone event for our festival!

Welcome back to another Wednesday Wordplay Workout!

Today's prompt: Write a poem about a worn pair of shoes.

Example:
"It took you a while before you ever came out of your box
Like people who are timid before opening up
At first I treated you like you were a prize
My most valuable possession
Your bottoms would only make contact on pure ground
I would double knot your laces with care
Clean every scuff because you were special
Until you became habit
Until you became daily routine
Just a means of protecting my feet
Taking me from one place to another
Now you're worn
But I must remember
That you're still the same pair of shoes
Always taking me places no matter how long we've been together
Never to be taken for granted"

Let's work those pens!
