Grain Mill & Ag Incidents

Emergency responders encourage extra precautions during harvest
Farming is one of the most dangerous occupations

HINTON, Iowa - Harvest season is one of the most dangerous times of the year for farmers.

Grain bins, and power take-off equipment can present especially hazardous conditions.
Bins now empty will soon be bursting with grain, leaving farmers vulnerable to injury or even death and rescue personnel prepared for the worst.

"Kind of takes the wind out of you because you know there's a 90 percent chance that it's going to be a recover instead of a rescue because of the weight of the grain. It would surprise a person how heavy grain really is when it's packing in around you. The more you breath the tighter it gets," said Hinton Fire Chief Chad Beck.

Beck says by simply slowing down, farmers can improve the chances of a safe harvest season. For those who's livelihood depends on successfully getting crops out of the field, that's often hard to do.

"Time is at the essence when you are harvesting and that means farmers are going faster than what they really need to do. You try and tell farmers that and it's gung ho all the time as fast as you can go because weather conditions can sneak up on you," said area farmer Mark Held.

With sunny and pleasant conditions expected this week, we can expect to see more activity in the country.

Drivers also are reminded to use extra caution, keeping an eye open for slow moving farm equipment sure to be on rural roads in coming weeks.
