What helps build a strong Great Lakes city? Access to the water, a vibrant waterfront economy and opportunities for people to experience the lake through recreational boating. 🌊

OMTA was proud to host representatives from the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Cities Initiative at the Sandusky Yacht Club on Wednesday, August 26, for a Recreational Boating Economy Roundtable, moderated by Cuyahoga County Executive Chris Ronayne.

Leaders from government, tourism, economic development, environmental organizations and Ohio’s marine industry came together for an engaging conversation about the role recreational boating plays in shaping successful Great Lakes communities.

From supporting local businesses and jobs to driving tourism, strengthening waterfront communities and creating a personal connection to the water, recreational boating is an important part of what makes a Great Lakes city a Great Lakes city.

Thank you to everyone who joined us and helped make the evening such a tremendous success. We look forward to continuing these conversations and ensuring recreational boating remains part of the discussion as Great Lakes communities plan for the future.

OMTA’s Joe Sugalski spent the day on Gibraltar Island and South Bass Island this week for a “field trip” hosted by Ohio Sea Grant and the Fresh Water Institute at Stone Laboratory. The day brought together water education, environmental and community leaders from across Northeast Ohio, including Cuyahoga County Executive Chris Ronayne, Emily Bacha of the Fresh Water Institute, and other regional partners.

The visit included an Ohio Sea Grant Science Cruise, a tour of Gibraltar Island and Stone Lab, and a stop at the new ODNR Aquatic Visitor Center. It was a great opportunity to learn more about Lake Erie research, water quality, aquatic resources, and the organizations working to protect one of Ohio’s most important natural and economic assets.

For OMTA, opportunities like this help strengthen connections between Ohio’s marine industry, environmental organizations, educators, and other partners who all share an interest in a healthy and thriving Lake Erie.

The Cleveland Boat Show is staying at the I-X Center!

After more than a year of advocacy and work to protect the future of Northeast Ohio’s consumer and trade-show economy, we are proud to share that the 70th Progressive Cleveland Boat Show will return to the I-X Center January 14–17, 2027.

For seven decades, the Cleveland Boat Show has brought families together, introduced generations to boating and supported dealers, manufacturers, vendors, union labor and thousands of jobs throughout Northeast Ohio.

We are tremendously grateful to Dee and Jimmy Haslam and the entire Haslam Sports Group team for recognizing the importance of these events and taking action to preserve them. Their commitment allows the Cleveland Boat Show to remain at the I-X Center while creating a bridge to its future home in the new enclosed stadium in Brook Park.

This is a big win for Ohio’s marine industry, our members and our community.

The shows will go on. See you at the I-X Center in January!
