I had the incredible honor of hearing Temple Grandin speak at URI over the weekend.

I had so many takeaways from her talk, but my favorite was something she reiterated several times.

Many of the brilliant professionals she's collaborated with struggle incredibly with Algebra. A lot of visual thinkers do.

Our trade and manufacturing professions are missing out on incredible talent due to algebra being a requirement for certification or graduation.

So if our US education system isn't developing the next generation of manufacturers, who do you think is?

We really do have our priorities screwed up... πŸŒŠπŸ’œπŸ”₯

Getting outside to move my body is one of the most helpful ways I've found to soothe the growing pains of menopause.

And taking my dog on epic walks to secluded spots is another!

You are not broken.

You are not bad.

You are not wrong.

You are human.

Perfectly imperfect.

Always growing.

Always trying.

Always falling down, and always getting back up.

And that's how it should be.

It's 2025... what does that even mean?

It means nothing and everything, all at the same time.

It means whatever you decide it means for you.

You don't need a new calendar to have a new beginning, a fresh start. You can do that whenever you want. But if you want the new year to mark the beginning of something, go for it.

Whatever you decide, though, DECIDE. Be unwavering in your dedication to that decision.

Do not let doubt take hold.

Do not let others' lack of vision or imagination or willingness to DECIDE for themselves cloud your commitment to your decision.

This does not mean be rigid. Quite the contrary. Be open to all the possibilities and opportunities. Decide that they are all part of your decision, even if they seem like obstacles at first.

New Year New You is a fine concept, but it's nothing more than arbitrary words unless there's a definite DECISION and COMMITMEMT to that decision.

Happy New Year! β„οΈπŸŒ²πŸ•―πŸŽ‰πŸ₯‚

One little change in your language...

"I have to..."

becomes

"I'm going to..."

Try this.

Almost immediately, you will notice that many chores or obligations begin to feel less heavy, les restrictive, less rensentable.

Soon after, you will begin to see that you are, in fact, making a choice to engage in those chores and obligations.

You may not like the alternatives, but you're still making a choice.

This is when you will begin to feel your power again. You will begin to see that it's always been there with you, but you didn't see it.

You can't lose your personal power or give it away. You can only make choices that feel disempowering.

And you can just as readily make choices that feel quite empowering.

When we're going through a period of growth, it's a type of energetic expansion. What feels like the world closing in on us, is actually us becoming too expansive for the space we've been occupying.

It's uncomfortable. We push up against our edges, as we expand beyond what we've been.

We have opportunities to see from a new vantage point, and take on a new perspective.

It often feels wrong or scary or problematic. I imagine that's how a butterfly feels pushing out of her chrysalis.

We must be gentle with ourselves during this expansion and growth. We are not yet familiar with what's beyond our comfort zone.

We can proceed slowly, but we must proceed. If we don't, we will be squeezed and stunted by the too small space of the familiar.

We can feel wobbly and take a minute to steady to ourselves, but we must commit to moving forward, lest we find ourselves repeating the past and becoming more and more frustrated with the same s**t different day experience.

It's ok to be uncomfortable. It's ok to be scared and go forth in the direction of our dreams. It's ok to be a beginner and do it messy. It's ok to get it wrong and try again, and again, and again, until it begins to be less wobbly, less messy, less uncomfortable.

The heaviness of growth is actually less like carrying a heavy burden, and more like being pinched by shoes that are too small.

Maybe that's why I love flip flops so much...πŸ˜‰πŸ©΄

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;
