In light of President Donald Trump’s recent proclamation (Oct. 9, 2025) reinstating Columbus Day, which celebrates Columbus’s “legacy” and the “contributions of countless Italian-Americans”, this webinar will re-examine the historical and ongoing associations between colonial figures and Italian migrant communities. Together with experts in migration, colonialism, and related histories, we’ll explore questions such as:

✨ Why have Italian communities on Turtle Island (North America) often identified with colonial figures?
✨ What have Indigenous Peoples, scholars, and activists said about the glorification of explorers like Columbus/Colombo and Cabot/Caboto?
✨ How are these narratives connected to broader histories of colonialism beyond Turtle Island?

🎙 Speakers
Stephen J. Cerulli (Fordham University)
Angelica Pesarini (University of Toronto)
Juan Carlos Mezo González (Mount Royal University)
Angela Nardozi (University of Toronto)
Paolo Frascà (University of Toronto)
