I don’t know about you, but I keep seeing these ads about cortisol being the driver of increased belly fat for peri- and menopausal women. I’ve been looking into it and here’s what’s what:

Research summarized by Harvard Health Publishing shows that midlife weight gain is driven by multiple physiological shifts—and cortisol is just one piece.

Here’s what’s actually happening:
✨ Estrogen is declining. Your body becomes more likely to store fat in your abdomen (instead of hips and thighs).

✨ You’re losing muscle (even if your weight stays the same). Less muscle = slower metabolism = fewer calories burned at rest.

✨ Cortisol can play a role—but it’s not the main driver. Chronic stress can increase belly fat, but it doesn’t act alone.

✨ Sleep disruption changes everything. Night sweats, insomnia, and early waking can elevate cortisol and increase hunger hormones.

BOTTOM LINE:
It’s not about “fixing cortisol.” It’s about supporting your changing physiology.

Here’s what research shows actually works:
💪🏽 Lift heavier weights (2–4x/week)
🥩 Prioritize protein at every meal
😴 Protect your sleep like it’s your job
🧘🏾‍♀️Build recovery into your routine (not just more cardio)

You don’t need to work harder.
You need to work smarter for this phase of life.

Building… doing RDLs at 135lbs. Still improving on form, but not letting perfection get in the way of progress.

Sunday fun day in my favorite hot yoga class taught by the amazing Rebecca D. at Lifetime Athletic in Florham Park. Though I use it as my active recovery day (which is equally as important as proper diet and more strenuous exercise) moving thru the various poses in that heat is no joke! 🔥🔥🔥😅😅😅 Heat or no heat, yoga can be incredibly beneficial to your body and your mind. 🧘🏾‍♀️

If you’re a woman in perimenopause or post-menopause & you’re using a GLP-1, this is non-negotiable 👇🏽

🧬 Protein + Strength Training = Protection
GLP-1s can reduce appetite—and while weight loss may happen, so can muscle loss if you’re not intentional. During perimenopause, estrogen is already declining, which makes it easier to lose muscle and harder to keep it.

Here’s why eating enough protein and lifting weights is essential:

🥩 Protein preserves lean muscle
Muscle is metabolic gold. It supports blood sugar control, metabolism, bone health, and long-term independence. Without enough protein, weight loss often means muscle loss—not what we want. Plus, muscle burns fat. So, the more muscle you have, the more you’re burning fat, even while resting.

🏋🏾‍♀️ Strength training fights hormonal muscle loss
Lifting weights sends a powerful signal to your body: keep this muscle. This is especially critical during perimenopause when muscle breakdown accelerates.

🔥 Muscle = better results on GLP-1s
More muscle means better insulin sensitivity, higher resting metabolism, and a stronger, more resilient body—so the weight you lose is more likely to be fat, not strength.

⚠️ The goal isn’t just a smaller body—it’s a stronger one. If you’re using a GLP-1 and not prioritizing protein and strength training, you’re leaving your health—and your long-term results—at risk.

👉🏽 Eat protein at every meal
👉🏽 Lift heavy (2–4x/week)
👉🏽 Protect your muscle like it’s your retirement plan (because, fr fr, it is).

OMG! I swear I didn’t grow a beard! It’s the “glow” from a 5 mile run. But, this is me and my message for today. Keep going because you CAN hit that goal!

Morning run… and a gorgeous morning at that! Half the battle is getting up, throwing on your sneakers and getting out the door. If you’ve done that, you’re winning.

Quick 3 miles in between rain spurts.

The perfect trifecta!! 🤣💪🏽

If you’re like me and navigating perimenopause or menopause, I want you to focus on 4 essential nutrients that’ll help balance hormones, boost energy, and ease symptoms: magnesium, potassium, omega-3s and fiber. Here’s why they should be your best friends:

✨ Magnesium – Helps with sleep, mood, and muscle relaxation. It also supports bone health and eases anxiety. Think dark leafy greens, nuts, and seeds (I’m a big pumpkin seeds gal, but it’s dealer’s choice);

💛 Potassium – Crucial for heart health and blood pressure regulation, plus it helps reduce bloating! Find it in bananas, avocados, and sweet potatoes;

🐟 Omega-3 Fatty Acids – Reduces inflammation, supports brain function, and may ease hot flashes. Load up on salmon, flaxseeds, and walnuts;

🌾 Fiber – Keeps digestion smooth, balances blood sugar, and supports heart health. Whole grains, legumes, and berries are fiber powerhouses.

Please do not play yourself and say that you can’t find foods that you like that contain one or more of these nutrients. I know that you know how to use the Google, which can likely give you an exhaustive list of foods and/or recipes. If you’re still having troubles, message me.
