Question for the managers: What matters to you when hiring a new grad into OB/mother baby area? What qualities do you look for?

Radical transformation is required in nursing. I love this concept using the socio ecological model to transform Black maternal health.

It pains me to share the loss of another Black mother from a pregnancy related complications. Autopsy reports revealed that Tori was in labor and suffered an eclamptic seizure while giving birth at home alone. She was believed to be 8 months pregnant. The status of the fetus was not shared. Her body was found after not being heard from for a few days during a welfare check.
Here are my two take aways from this loss:
1. Preeclampsia is a deadly condition if not monitored. All mothers need a blood pressure cuff at home and need to be educated on the warning signs.
2. Nurses can play a huge role in being not only educators but advocates for our patients. The risk of preeclampsia is high for Black women. We must tailor our education to our client population. Lack of patient knowledge was the one of the number one contributors to poor outcomes. We must do better. My deep condolences to her family.

Let’s chat! Looking for nurse managers and directors of mother baby who would be willing to discuss competencies with you travel and per diem nurses. I’d also welcome discuss from floor nurses. What gaps are you seeing if any?
When it comes to certification, OB nurses are more likely to become certified than mother baby nurses. 66,154 are certified in Inpatient Obstetric Nursing compared to only 17,680 who are certified in maternal newborn nursing. Full stop! 🛑 This a staggering and dramatic difference
Specialty certification has long been established as a marker of clinical excellence. Postpartum nurses are the last point of contact between the hospital and the community. How is this lack of certification in mother baby impacting patients outcomes? I love to chat with some Mother baby nurses. Why is there such a gap?

Mother baby and postpartum have been disregarded as the “easy unit” in the perinatal space for far too long. Our work is not easy, it’s critical. We are the last stop before people go home, which is where they are dying. We are our own unique specialty and need content specific to our area as well. As I work to build Ignite Maternal Health, what would you like to see from us?

Postpartum nurses!!!!Our families are most vulnerable during the postpartum period. A full 30 percent occurred from that point until the baby’s first birthday, a period that had not been a focus of maternal mortality research. What. Am we be doing different?
