Absolutely love the trash receptacle, the swings & the new things to come, like slide, bike rack, benches & whatever else is in store to make this a great family oriented place.

As you may or may not know, the Cherokee County Health Department has worked for the last year to provide resources, education, policymaking and technical assistance to the communities in Cherokee County that promote physical activity and to***co prevention.

The department is assisting the City of West Mineral to develop a city park and walking trail that will encourage exercise and promote healthy lifestyles. We were very fortunate to include the skilled craftsmanship from the Coffeyville Community College Technical students, Columbus Kansas in the design, manufacturing and placing of our replica “Big Brutus” steam shovel trash receptacle placed in the West Mineral City Park.

Projects like this mean the world to small communities providing a sense of pride and support to their town. This project would not have been made possible without the Kansas Department of Commerce TAPS grant. This project is a special and unique feature added to the park that gives it a special commemorative touch! Thank you Kansas Department of Commerce!

Get kids moving, track all physical activity on the Marathon Kids App. We will start this program on Monday until end of May. Also talked about healthy eating, how important it is the properly fuel the body. I’m going to give a prize to the one that was the most active. Thank you Kylie for your presentation & time.

Southeast: Cherokee County

Southeast Kansas has a long history of coal mining, evolving from deep-shaft mining in the mid-1800s to strip mines in the 1900s. Large power shovels were used in strip mining to remove layers of coal. This Bucyrus-Erie electric coal mining shovel, nicknamed Big Brutus, was built in 1962 for Pittsburg & Midway Coal Mining. The shovel was the second largest of its type ever built and is the largest remaining electric shovel in the world. The machine is 160 ft tall and weighs 11 million pounds. It operated for 11 years until it was decommissioned in 1974. After being left to rust for several years, Big Brutus was restored and is now part of a museum detailing the area’s mining history. Big Brutus was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 2018 - https://bit.ly/3IWpIF7.
