Who Are the Churches That China Is Persecuting? - Domino Theory 01/19/2026

"Yang Fenggeng (楊鳳崗), a sociologist who studies Christianity and religion in China, has a model of how religions there are allowed to operate. There is a “red market” of state-sanctioned religions and a “black market” of illegal religions. In between is what he describes as the “gray market,” religions or religious organizations that are not legally recognized, but were somewhat tolerated by authorities." Yayang Church is on the margin of red toward gray, unlike Early Rain Covenant Church and BJ Zion Church, which have been in the gray, and the authorities are pushing them toward black.

Does your church recite the Nicene Creed at worship service? Does your church teach about the Nicene Creed? Why or why not? On this occasion of the 1700th anniversary of the Nicaea Council, what should we think about its relevance to the past, present, and future of Christianity in Asia and Asian diasporas?

Chinese Catholics mourn Pope Francis, mull over Church’s future 05/13/2025

The Vatican “compromised much” to secure the agreement, while the ruling Communist Party “took it as a victory for effectively reducing the underground church”, said Professor Fenggang Yang, the director of the Centre on Religion and the Global East at Purdue University.

“Nowadays, the underground Catholic practice is much more costly,” he said.

The Center on Religion and the Global East presents Global East Mapping Religion Webinar 5: Southeast Asia
Nanyang Sites - a GIS Data Repository for Religious Sites in Southeast Asia

Presenters: Kenneth Dean (National University Singapore), Marcus Bingenheimer (Temple University)

This webinar will take place on April 25 9am (Singapore); April 24 9pm (EDT) – Register in advance for this meeting:

The Nanyang Sites GIS Data project is a comprehensive initiative dedicated to mapping and analyzing religious sites across Southeast Asia. Spearheaded by scholars Kenneth Dean and Marcus Bingenheimer, along with a team of graduate students from the National University of Singapore, the project meticulously geo-references sites from various legacy datasets (like Wolfgang Franke’s seminal works on Chinese epigraphy). This endeavor has resulted in the creation of detailed datasets that catalog hundreds of sites, providing valuable insights into the distribution and historical significance of Chinese religious landmarks in the region. The datasets are made publicly accessible through an interactive platform, facilitating further research and exploration. In our upcoming talk, Bingenheimer and Dean will delve into the research methodologies employed in this project, including the processes of data collection, validation, and geo-referencing. We will also discuss the data structures utilized to organize and present this information effectively, highlighting the challenges encountered and the solutions devised to ensure data accuracy and usability. This presentation aims to provide attendees with a comprehensive understanding of the project’s approach and its contributions to the study of Chinese religious heritage in Southeast Asia.

Our Story

The Center on Religion and Chinese Society at Purdue has been established to advance the social scientific study of religion in Chinese societies and among the Chinese in diasporas. Both of the words “Chinese” and “religion” are inclusive here. We are interested in all religions and spiritualities practiced by the Chinese anywhere in the world, and being Chinese in the global era means being cosmopolitan and going beyond existing boundaries. We hope that our research projects and scholarly exchanges will help to deepen scholarly understanding of Chinese religions, and will enhance mutual understanding of Chinese and American peoples. We would like the CRCS to become a bridge – a bridge between scholars at Purdue and scholars in other parts of the United States, a bridge between Chinese and American scholars across the Pacific, and a bridge between scholars and the public through media, symposia, lectures, and publications. We hope CRCS will serve the scholarly community of Chinese religions in the global village.

It has been ten years since the founding of the Center on Religion and Chinese Society at Purdue University. In the beginning, we set out to advance the social scientific study of religion in Chinese societies and among the Chinese diaspora. With the generous support of Purdue University, John Templeton Foundation, Henry Luce Foundation, and many individuals, we have accomplished much. Highlighted here are some of the major milestones in the cultivation of this nascent field of inquiry: research projects, conferences, workshops, the new journal Review of Religion and Chinese Society, books and articles, and more.

To celebrate the past and to chart the future, we are organizing a series of symposia to review the state of the art in research on each of the major religions in “Global China.”

From the beginning, we have served as a bridge across the Pacific. Moving forward, we are broadening our mission to the “Global East.”
