FOOTBALL/BASEBALL CARD FRIDAY: Each week of the 2026 Purdue Football season, we’re spotlighting a alum’s historic performance against that week’s opponent.

This week, we’re traveling back to the first game of the 1960 season, when Purdue quarterback Bernie Allen helped the Boilermakers achieve a 27-all tie against UCLA after trailing 13-0 early. After playing defense (and kicking) for most of the game, Allen came in at quarterback for the final possession and led a 78-yard touchdown drive. He hit Joe Harris with a 28-yard touchdown pass with three minutes to play to make it 27-25 and then connected with John Greiner on the game-tying 2-point pass.

Purdue finished 4-4-1 that season, but Allen led the Boilermakers to a pair of major upsets over then-No. 3 Ohio State and then-No. 1 Minnesota. A two-sport athlete at Purdue, Allen pursued his first love — baseball — after his Boilermaker career ended. He signed with the Minnesota Twins after college and went on to have a 12-year career in the big leagues, primarily with the Twins and Washington Senators.

The 2026 Boilermakers will play their first road game of the season tomorrow against UCLA. Tune in at 11 p.m. ET on Big Ten Network.
