I learned this mindset in the military.

Back-to-back missions meant going hours without eating because there simply wasn’t time.

So I learned to ignore it.

I learned to push through the hunger.

I learned that whatever I needed could wait until the mission was over.

And eventually, I got so used to it that I stopped noticing my hunger altogether.

Then I carried that same mindset into EMS.

12-hour shifts.
Back-to-back calls.
No guaranteed breaks.

And I thought skipping meals was just part of the job.

But it came with a price.

I was exhausted.

My energy was all over the place.

I’d go hours without eating and then come home absolutely starving.

And instead of understanding that my body was trying to tell me something, I blamed myself.

I thought I just needed more discipline.

I thought eating less was the solution.

It wasn’t.

I didn’t need to learn how to ignore my hunger better.

I needed to learn how to fuel myself consistently—even when my schedule was unpredictable.

That meant keeping food with me.

Planning for the days when I wouldn’t get a break.

Having meals I could eat quickly between calls.

And most importantly, realizing that taking care of myself wasn’t making me less dedicated to the job.

It was allowing me to show up better for it.

If you’ve spent years putting the mission, the calls, the patients, or everyone else before yourself…

You might not need more discipline.

You might just need to learn that you matter too.

I remember having back-to-back missions where there simply wasn’t time to stop and eat.

Before I knew it, the entire day had passed and I hadn’t eaten a single real meal.

Eventually, I got used to it.

I got really good at ignoring hunger.

I told myself, ā€œI’ll eat when I get homeā€ and sometimes, that wasn’t for another 6-8 hours.

The problem was I carried that mindset into my civilian EMS job because it felt familiar.
The 12 hours shifts.
No guaranteed breaks.
Back-to-back calls.
Too busy to sit down.

And eventually, I was so tired that food felt like another thing I had to figure out.

So I’d skip meals.
Grab whatever was quick.
Fast food.
Gas station snacks.
And I though I was bad at nutrition. But that wasn’t true.

I had to retrain myself to prioritize myself too.
That I still needed to eat.
That I need to fuel my body.

You deserve to take care of yourself too.
Even when the job is demanding everything from you.

And I wish I had learned that much earlier.
Because a strong first responder doesn’t mean running yourself into the ground.

It means learning how to take care of the person behind the uniform too. šŸ’›

You don’t need to be more strict.
You need a better system.

One of the biggest mistakes I see women in EMS make is assuming you need to cut more calories to lose weight.

But when we take a closer look, they’re already:

🚨 Skipping meals because shift got busy
🚨 Grabbing whatever food is available because they don’t have a backup plan
🚨 Spending hours looking for the ā€œperfectā€ meal prep strategy instead of keeping things simple

The truth is, weight loss isn’t sabotaged by one bad meal.

It’s being sabotaged by inconsistent habits that make healthy choices harder than they need to be.

Before you start another diet, ask yourself:

āž”ļø Am I eating consistently?
āž”ļø Do I have a backup plan for busy shifts and long days
āž”ļø Am I making nutrition more complicated than it needs to be?

Because the habits that work when the pager goes off, the shift runs late, and life gets chaotic, are the habits that are going to get lasting results.

Which one do you struggle with the most?
1ļøāƒ£ Skipping meals
2ļøāƒ£ Having no backup plan
3ļøāƒ£ Overcomplicating meal prep

08/04/2026

But I’ve learned that ā€˜later’ never comes.

If I wait until life slows down…
I’ll be waiting forever.

So instead of chasing perfect, I’m choosing consistency.

Some workouts will be shorter.
Some meals will be simple.
Some days I’ll just do what I can.

Because taking care of myself isn’t something I do when I have extra time.

It’s what allows me to keep showing up for the people who need me.

If you’re a first responder waiting for life to calm down before you prioritize your health…

This is your reminder:

Your career is worth giving your best to.

But so are you.
