Live looping is a powerful tool for students, offering a unique and immersive way to deepen their musical understanding and creativity. By using real-time looping, students can explore intricate layers of sound and harmony, providing them with a direct, hands-on approach to composition and arrangement. This method fosters an active listening environment, encouraging students to engage their ear training as they tune in to the subtleties of rhythm, pitch, and texture. With each looped layer, students learn to navigate the complexities of timing, harmony, and counterpoint in a highly dynamic and immediate way, sharpening their ability to think critically and adapt musically in the moment. The live looping process, with its constantly evolving nature, allows students to experiment fearlessly, honing their improvisation and musicality while developing a deeper sense of independence and confidence in their musical expression.

The impact of live looping extends beyond technical skill development; it nurtures a holistic approach to musicianship. By looping different instruments, vocal parts, or rhythmic elements, students gain a more comprehensive understanding of how musical ideas come together in real-time. It encourages them to think like composers, orchestrators, and arrangers, enhancing their ability to create and perform within a collaborative space. The freedom to experiment and the immediate feedback of live looping also encourage a sense of personal style and artistic voice, empowering students to take ownership of their musical journey. Ultimately, live looping offers an engaging way to develop both the creative and analytical aspects of music, laying a strong foundation for lifelong musicianship.

I just love the evocative, emotional and healing qualities of this chord progression I put together a few years back for my students. What a wonderful foundation for improvisatory exploration and the perfect choice for a recital improvisation, right here at the Icicle Creek concert stage!! Let the sonorous sound of your cello blend beautifully with this example as your imagination takes you far and away, beyond the notes on the page and into the musical breath of these enchanted hills. Enjoy!

I am asking all of my students to think of their favorite unpublished music and we will be transcribing them together focusing on songs that inspire and help uplift the planet. We will then be listening for the interconnectedness between our expression and our hopes and dreams for humanity while exploring every aspect of our artistry and technique through this intention. Todays transcription is an original of mine titled Sahale, named after the majestic peak in the North Cascades. You can find a link below to the sheet music as well as the recording here, https://shaundiaz.bandcamp.com/ Let the soaring melodies and energy of the music lift you as I take you on a journey far and away to a magical, sacred and high ground I call "Sahale."

This months student transcription is from the Soundtrack from the movie Departures. For my students this is a study on lyrical expression. We will work on musical glissando's, note shaping and bow control, shaped width and speed in our vibrato as well as phrasing to work towards an authentic and soulful performance. Enjoy!! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UiyFeT0Tpkk&feature=youtu.be

"While my students earn the fundamentals of a classical musical training all of my students explore the world of improvisation and composition and love to play off of the page when the opportunity arises and I encourage that. I believe in nurturing the unique spark that we are all born with and fostering creativity and a purpose-filled artistic path that arises from within. I feel this is an important part of anyone's musical training, wherever you should decide to take your skills. May your journey be rich, deeply rewarding and fulfill your deepest music desires and visions." - Shaun

The artist must summon all his/her energy, sincerity, and the greatest modesty in order to shatter the old cliches that come so easily to hand while working, which can suffocate the little flower that does not come, ever, the way one expects. - Henri Matisse
