Seniors are overly focused on application deadlines this time of year—but submitting applications is the easiest part of the process.

If your strategy is to apply to a long list of schools now and make the difficult decisions after the acceptances arrive, you may be kicking the can down the road. That often leads to rushed campus visits, incomplete financial-aid comparisons, and ultimately, a college choice that may not be the right fit.

As more colleges close or merge, both prospective and current students will be negatively impacted. Fewer options leads to less competition, while tuition continues to rise and schools cut programs and services just to stay afloat.

More than ever, it’s important to look beyond marketing and rankings to understand a college’s long-term financial health. You want to be confident the school you choose today will still be able to provide the experience and opportunities it promises four years down the road.

This trend actually started long before COVID, and it’s one of the reasons I decided to become an independent college advisor. I enjoy using my experience in higher ed to help families make informed and affordable decisions that will serve them well beyond their freshman year.

April 30th is here. For most students, tomorrow is their deadline to submit an admissions deposit for Fall 2026.
