When Xavier was born, his family was told he might never be able to walk. Today, at 18, you can find him walking confidently around campus with his white cane, competing on the Perkins track team, and wearing a huge smile.

Xavier is a joyful student who genuinely loves school. After more than a decade at Perkins, Xavier's journey shows what's possible when students are surrounded by compassion, expert support, and a community that believes in them.

His family attributes this life-changing transformation directly to the immense kindness of the people at Perkins.

Why do some symbols look the same?

Braille is a code made up of six dots that people who are or have use to read and write.

Because there are a limited number of dot combinations (63!), the same pattern can have different meanings depending on where it appears in a word or sentence, kind of like how a word in print can have different meanings depending on the context.

For example, the same braille symbol can represent a punctuation mark, a letter combination, or a shortened word depending on how it is used.

The examples in the images use contracted (or "shorthand") braille.

That’s the reality for more than 80% of children with Cerebral/Cortical Visual Impairment (CVI), a brain-based form of blindness, who are left behind in their classrooms and communities all over the world.

But Perkins is on a mission to change that.
