Amazon Conservation We conserve biodiversity in Peru and Bolivia where the Andes meet the Amazon rainforest

ACA’s directors and staff are experienced ecologists and conservationists who work to protect biodiversity by studying ecosystems and developing innovative conservation tools to protect land in the region while supporting the livelihoods of local communities. Concentrating resources in the field, ACA aims to protect the forests by creating a network of state, community, and private lands managed for conservation and sustainable use or resources with the goal of saving rare species and habitats and learning from the land.

Illegal gold mining. What happened in the first half of 2026?

The new Amazon Mining Watch Panorama report takes a closer look at gold mining expansion across the Amazon between January and June 2026, revealing where new mining activity is emerging, expanding, and reaching areas previously untouched by mining.

Across all eight Amazonian countries and one French territory, approximately 36,000 hectares (approx. 89,000 acres) of new mining areas were detected. Of this expansion, 30% occurred in Protected Areas and 15% in Indigenous Territories.

From new incursions in Ecuador and Venezuela to accelerating mining deforestation in Brazil, Peru, and Bolivia, Panorama provides a regional view of how gold mining is reshaping forests across borders.

This regional initiative brings together civil society organizations, including Indigenous organizations, from several Amazonian countries to strengthen cooperation in addressing illegal gold mining in the Amazon.

Powered by Amazon Mining Watch, the report combines AI-powered satellite monitoring with regional analysis to make these changes visible and support more timely, coordinated responses.

For more than a decade, Acre has shown that protecting forests can go hand in hand with supporting the people who depend on them. Acre was the first jurisdiction in the world to establish a REDD+ (Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation) program, helping channel millions of euros toward forest communities while deforestation has steadily declined since 2022.

But this progress is now facing a new challenge. Road expansion, including a proposed connection to Pucallpa, Peru, could drive up to 133,800 hectares (330,700 acres) of additional deforestation and put the territories of Indigenous peoples in voluntary isolation at risk.

Our new special report, Acre at the Crossroads, explores what is at stake and how strengthening the bioeconomy can help create economic opportunities while keeping forests standing.

| Meet the Bolivian squirrel monkey (Saimiri boliviensis), a small and highly social primate found across the forests of the Bolivian Amazon. 🐒

Often traveling in groups, these agile monkeys move through the forest canopy in search of fruits, insects, and other food. Their social behavior and active lifestyle make them a fascinating part of the Amazon’s biodiversity.

Captured by our sister organization camera traps, sightings like this help us document wildlife and better understand the species sharing these forests with us.
